Poem of the Month April 2021
fingerprint on the edge of the sky
Spaces between rain drops are the blood
Trenched in veins between body & Holy Ghost.
Somewhere inside,
Compass spins heavy o’er the heart.
Navigate imagination by stars, scars,
Suburban semaphore & the comfort of strangers:
Fountains bursting up towards Heaven
Falling as fragments of Dead Sea scroll.
The brain is conversation
In the ruins of elegiac language.
Sinking silence of the gnawed night
Visions afar, broken teeth of river mouth
Taste the thirst of dying mother-tongue.
Echoes of anfarwoli* drown the mind valley.
From her jaw of white bone, brittle light ballet,
Moon remembers when sunflowers faced her;
Until safflower arrows in sunspot showers
Hung her from the skies knees.
Pocketful of poetry as poverty,
Skimming sonnets into begging lake
Syllables stolen by a cold wind,
Dragging them into a lonely wood.
Trying to read the runes of the day’s in-between
Above all this,
Beyond clouds and cages,
Marriage of sea and birds:
The most exquisite poem
I have ever written is you.
*Anfarwoli. In Welsh, literally means to “undie someone.”

You know how to love me
To flow down on skillful fingers,
To my feet, to enjoy in full, Until
the Thread of Consciousness breaks
Constellations of Incisions,
This does not frighten tears in my soul, no
And the fact that the light disappears,
And the Universe dedicates tears to the stars
Just let it be You and I...
Know how to love me until the
sweetest death. And You know ...
You are responsible for me

cruel mind games
her hand looked like stretched canvas losing elasticity
lily-white paper-thin skin lying over bone and drying veins
this vibrant life has no current thoughts and lost electricity
my warm hand attempts to give her spark back as she wanes
she looked in my eyes and for a moment I saw her
my white southern grandmother called me “el blanquito”
loved me and my spanish side english many preferred
her smile soured and she backslid her hand very slow
her sweet hazel eyes which I also carry turned black
she spat to my feet and slapped me then told me to go home
the sweet protector of the caramel-colored child now attacks
to my once guardian angel I will be the man you helped comb

The Greatest Love of all Time
can’t make sense of these miracles
maybe God does exist
even if the devil’s on my shoulder
but it doesn’t matter to me
I can always lose myself in your eyes
so if we don’t make it to heaven
I’ll gladly hold you in hell
we could be just about anywhere
and it’ll feel like bliss
when all is said and done
burn me up with my lover
mix our ashes together
and on the urn write
“the greatest love of all time”
some days you’re drowning
and I’m trying to save you
some days I’m internally crying
and you wipe the tears away
life is infectious to the mind
as pain increases we go mad
but we find ways to keep our sanity
when perfection is unattainable
we can still promise our presence
hugs and kisses forever
from me to you
when all is said and done
burn me up with my lover
mix our ashes together
and on the urn write
“the greatest love of all time”
love can bring peace to the soul
I don’t have all the answers
but don’t need them
when heaven is you, I’m levitating
off the ground up towards the sky
if I could take away my stress
and take away your worries
I’d forget about the whole damn world
and just sink my universe into yours
maybe God does exist
