Aurora

I traveled to the far ends
of the Earth
to touch what you’d become—

light
on seas of glass
where ancients have passed
long before us.

I cannot shake the memory
of our hands
entwined
on city streets, amidst a rush
of humanity, clamoring
on sidewalks,
dens
of neon and concrete—

Ah, how I felt complete
in those days, unaware
of strange roads
ahead
that would mangle my soul.

You became ashes, I
became hollow, both of us
scattered on winds, and
I search still, for
answers and mercy.

But here, I can see you
in the quiet depths of the heavens, expanded
to hold all that you were
and are, now.

I shall wait in solitude
as time runs down, and
I become the Aurora, too.

Thanks for kicking things off, MadameLavender! You've submitted a beautiful entry, and I enjoyed reading it. You desire to become like an Aurora, I desire to become like the moon; we both wish to shine on those we care about especially in their darkest moments.

Thanks for participating in my competition!

A Night in Northern Minnesota

The earth now covered
Under a blanket of white
Will sleep till spring

But the heaven’s bloom
With Minnesota’s dusk
In fabulous light

Varicolored sky
Aurora Borealis dance
With spirits enchanted

The moon reflected
Upon the new fallen snow
Beauty was the sight

How I love this place
That’s called the North Star State
Where the night is joy
Where night is ablaze

The above poem was written in Haiku verse.

Aurora

( a Rensaku = linked Tanka )

stalking lesser paths
hello dear boy I’ve missed you
stretching shadow’s cast

do you see me in my pale
while all around is somber

*
look the playful flare
the iridescent iris
it covers for my sorrow

to never mind the lovelorn
I stack their dead like cordwood

*
here your kind afloat
tho’ you’re so diff’rent aren’t you
you know where I’m from

I slither down the river
while regaling the night sky

*
forsaken by sin
the colors of the rainbow
too few too many

air-brushed into Aurora
this is what God has left you

FLIGHT CONFIRMED

February is not the worst time
to see Aurora Borealis from Fairbanks

(last family vacation
off Kaua'i coast
the legendary green flash
presented
we had the good fortune
to be on a boat
but not a one of us saw
so there you go
destinations
fade in and out
there is always
some green light
in the heavens
somewhere)

Andrew and Vincent

“I miss you” Andrew says looking up at the skies,
His eyes full of wonder and amazement,
For it has been years since one went to heaven,
Watching over his brother like a guardian angel.

“You bring them happiness” Vincent’s voice echoes,
“They’ll love you beyond the ends of the earth”
“They love us” Andrew replies with a sigh and mirth,
Because you can see it in their parent’s smiles.

The twins converse with a transcending bond,
Vincent beams with a light that decorates the sky,
Andrew smiles back looking at the beautiful display,
His eyes full of wonder and amazement.
