Perigee
she ran into the house
full moon scared her thin
afraid it would crash into us
her mind was gone by then
her son picked out a ruby
she wanted a necklace instead
a lie would have been softer
disappointment stayed in his head
they ride in on dead horses
claim I’m the worst
more words fling outward
roles switch and reverse
he was afraid to tell her
what he might need
verbal pats on the back
were no guide to succeed
young boy in the little blue house
do your best in school
or days...

Such a great blow for a day job
The dude at the counter said that he had gotten the job
He was to go downstairs and meet the boss, get his apron and get briefed on the rules and regulations of the restaurant
He went downstairs to meet his boss
He walked to the threshold of the door and knocked gently
The boss looked up from the desk and told him to come in and sit down
He asked him how bad he wanted the job
He told him that he really likes the place and he thought that he could really...
The boss cut him off and asked him what he can do to get the job
He didn't know what he...

Prize Bird
Well, good morning, Tweety Bird,
Such a pleasant surprise,
With your mother's sharp wit,
And, lo, myself in those eyes.
How I've loved your sweet song,
Both the coos and the cries,
For the year it has been,
As the time swiftly flies.
In the contest I've invented,
Among fathers worldwide,
I've won loveliest daughter,
But you are my prize.

Redemption
My 26 year-old daughter has bought
a Christmas tree. She stands
at the stove, stirring sausage
and parmesan cheese into scrambled eggs.
It’s that time of the month when food
is scarce, but my daughter
has a knack for making meals
out of sparse ingredients.
I sit with my 3 month-old granddaughter
who rests in her swing.
We play pat-a-cake, then I roll her legs
like the wheels of a choo-choo train.
My daughter comes
to sit next to us at the table,
a jigsaw puzzle spread out
upon its surface. ...

Cannibalism
Cannibalism...
Don't try this at home!
Especially if there is...
questionable hygiene...
and don't eat Uncle Mark!
But when you do cook...
always wash the fowl and foul!
Make enough of everyone...
Uncle Mark loves leftovers!
Mom won't be eating tonight...
she's just so stuffed!
I'll tell you why - after dinner!

Love is…
An obligation carved across
the leaves of stone, genetic book
of life, sometimes diluted by a loss
of love given by those supposed to look
to your development, give care.
I can’t say my genetic book will close.
I still receive its meanings now, for those
I’ve long since disavowed, would soak
in time, indifference. We don’t deserve
but neither are we unworthy of love.
It glows in darkness like a bellied stove,
its heat sometimes a secret thing.

Devotional Radicals
Little Kenny Dewitt was barely 5 years old when he found out by his parents that his heart was wicked
His parents were religious fanatics, who read the good book each and every hour
They isolated little Harry from the rest of the world
His father worked on the farm producing milk & meat to sell in town
His mother was a stay at home mom, strict and overbearing
Many of the locals didn't even know Harry Sack existed
His parents taught him that in order to be faithful to the lord, you must do what we say or want
Harry was given chores from...

Got Conned Into Performing In A Movie
Jill
told Mom
and Dad she
was going to
California
for spring break. The truth is
she got conned by Kate into
performing naked in a porn
movie with her. I ought to know this
because someone mailed a copy of it.

You are taller than I remember
We both grew up,
and I do not recognize you.
You do not recognize me
either.
I wonder if you
remember us
like I
do.
I see us,
at the kitchen table,
the clock ticking
a reminder of sleep.
We talked about
shared secrets,
favorite colors,
and how to be better.
It was a long time ago.
We were so small.
My room was green.
Yours was blue.
That table is gone now.
The house too.
Nothing made it out of there intact.
Not even us.
But I still...
and I do not recognize you.

Babuska's sarmale
In a snowy Romanian village, during Christmas cheer,
my Babuska spun tales, both delightful and queer.
The tradition was sarmale, a savory delight,
Cabbage wrapped treasures, cooked all through the night.
Meat and rice nestled in leaves so green,
simmered in tomato, a feast so serene.
But woven in laughter and holiday charms
were Babuska’s stories with their quirky alarms:
"Behave well, dear children, lest you wish to be seen
in the pot with the sarmale, simmering and lean."
The children would giggle, eyes...

Dear diary: thoughts about family Dec '24
I don't understand a great deal about psychology, I spend a lot of time trying to manage my own, but I'm not an expert in people.
Something I've never really understood is family dynamics. It's never made sense to me, the insular nuclear unit.
I don't like secrets. Well, I like my own secrets. I don't like other people's secrets. I don't like having to play pretend for other people, so that the world looks at them as better than they really are. Notable exception is my daughter. She reminds me too much of myself.
My family is all about secrets and tradition...
