green and jasmine,
mild brew, refreshing;
great afternoon drink; a
touch of lemon, & some
ginger, so delicious! Ice
cubes melting to a perfect
temperature, paper straw,
red and white (you just like
straws) awaiting lip contact,
exactly the way you want it!
Friend pats you on the back,
nice gesture, tea goes flying
in the air! All gone! Spills
onto uncle, he jumps
up and a
branch
falls
where
uncle

sitting!

i remember
she took us
to the ruins
i must have
been around
five years old,
she made
my brother
and i
sit under
an old tree
it was
twisted
and bent
in ways
i still can't
describe
to this
day,
she laid
out this old
crotcheted
blanket
placed her
basket over
the stains
took out
sandwiches,
fresh orange
and cake
for us to
have
and
said
this is

After the rain
i
It was a rude awakening:
flung into a maelstrom that wasn't mine,
for weeks, I kept watch over you;
stood guard like a human umbrella,
hoping the elements would batter
this old wood instead.
But lightning struck your core
and the damage was done.
ii
Clouds blackened, as gusts were gathering.
I did not want to read the signs.
Very soon, it was pouring again.
Rain hammered us both:
me and you, shelter-less.
This storm was hard to bear—
cascading sheets of rain falling
as the wind howled. ...

Requiem for the Duke of Paducah
Requiem for the Duke of Paducah
My parents were millionaires
When having a million dollars meant something
My parents were penniless, beaten and broken under crushing debt
My parents were entrepreneurs
When being an entrepreneur didn’t mean being a capitalist
Because everybody was a capitalist
My parents were white trash, cracker tornado bait
My parents were iconoclasts
Who taught their children to kneel down before no man
My parents were social climbers, terrified of giving themselves away
Being found out as rustic simpletons...

anxiety vi (love and dying)
Sometimes it feels like
I can't get a break
I've been sick for months now
random viruses, cold, flu
anxiety depression
funnily enough no covid
I worry about my health
mentally
physically
spiritually
My dad's had covid twice now
he's in hospital with a cough
that won't go away
and needs oxygen to breathe
they say he might have lung cancer
but can't run tests
until he's covid negative
We're not good with "I love you's"
so I text him
asking if he's doing okay
and that I hope...

grief is a silent lake
Everything's changed
But still...everything's the same
Death has visited us once again
What I wouldn't give for a ride from them
World views shifting and changing
It's hard to breathe and even harder to swallow
Empty words and unfinished poems
The world feels darker since she's gone
But the world really wasn't much better
When she was bound to this life
In such a deeply broken body
The family isn't as vibrant as before
The violence I feared just seems a bore
What would they do that they haven't already
I close my eyes and...

Some Conversations Can Wait
On the road, 3 AM
homeward bound
from a tense weekend
family reunion, her side
spent most of my time
just trying to hide
ya see her folks
they don’t like me much
call me a liberal,
hell bound sinner and such
though they keep casting
I refuse to take the bait
silent to their harassing
feigning a vanquished state
Hungry, needing a potty break
at a crowded roadside diner we pause
choking down limp lettuce salad
with a hard-as-nails steak
both exhausted, really shouldn’t talk
we start comparing...

Making good
Who better to trust
than he who fixes all things —
rebuilds vehicles,
restores engines, repairs clocks,
builds, constructs and renovates?

I Escaped, But Only Just - Part 16: Family Strife
Get to bed,’ my father yelled after another row at home.
‘I won’t,’ I said. ‘It’s not even half ten yet. You can’t tell me what to do. I’m not a kid.’
He jumped to his feet, his face white with rage, and I took a step back. Already, the images were playing in my mind…him leaping towards me and grabbing my hair, clenching his fist to strike. I bolted from the room before he could do any of those things and ran up the stairs to my bedroom, his voice booming through the house.
‘Bloody lunatic. One of these days, I’m going to sell that piano of yours and...

Pointing Fingers
Foreword:: This is a piece i wrote many years ago. I have found a box of old journals and had the want to share this
Fuck the rhythm
and fuck the rhyme
It's been years since I've written
but I'm so sick of comparing and thinking about time
But since I'm on the subject
let's talk about time
how its going too fast
and I keep getting skipped in line
How I give it my all
and work until I'm numb
fake smiling through it all
waiting on my miracle to come
but it never arrives ...

I Escaped, But Only Just - Part 14: A Trip To France
I achieved modest results in my school exams, along with passes in commerce, music, and religious studies, a merit at grade five piano and a high per cent for my grade five theory of music. I’d need to retake some subjects at Sixth Form college, but at least for now the musical stuff was going to plan.
College beckoned - but before that a holiday abroad. We’d visited Croatia the previous year, spending two nights camping in Salzburg on the way there and back. This time, we would sail to France and camp in Brittany. Before leaving for France, I borrowed a French course from the...
