Demens Mundi (Excerpt)

Entry #2 - August 12th 1937

The scent of diesel engulfed my nostrils as I stepped foot outside for the first time in weeks. Anywhere I looked, there was always a slight fade of smoke, the people walking around wore a combination of formal clothing, leather and rounded goggles. I tipped my chimney hat to two woman, waltzing their way past me. I was ignored. It was good to be alive again. The stones in the pavement were slowly blacking in colour, due to the intense and delicious smelling pollution of a city busy at work. I continued onwards, heading toward my job, at the gear factory, not knowing what else the day may bring. Cars and vans pelted out smoke as they noisily drove past, blasting their horns at every chance they may get. All the noises, sights and smells were refreshing, but provoked no memories of who I am, and what I was doing here. The only thing I knew about myself was how much I, and those around me, loved this world and its almost cough-provoking atmosphere. Everywhere I looks I saw wrought iron, people wearing suits, summer dresses and funny hats, all originally white, but had been wittered to a grayish soot color. They all seemed very joyous and full of life, but that didn't effect the social stature. The poor didn't mingle with the rich and it was the same in reverse. Everyone wore rounded eye goggles, with the lenses blacked out. I had my own pair, and even though they appeared to be opaque, the sight side was merely tinted. These were protection from IPA's or Intense Pollution Areas, pockets of the city that would basically burn your eyes through. Even though the world around me was brand new, I had a very good feeling about it. A very good feeling, indeed.
