The Price of Poetry
In dollars and cents the value fades
Behind scars and bars built to keep something out
Covers of books close to seal the words in
Concealed on a shelf amidst volumes of verse
Written by dead poets from societies long forgotten
Whose words drift from the pages read in schools and dark bedrooms
That linger a little too long in the minds of broken souls
Sold to imaginary demons in control of lonely hearts
Ridden with guilt from the pain inflicted by themselves
While blaming a deity consumed with power and pride
Extending egotistical tentacles that wrap around a seduced muse
Who inspires more words of worship for self-satisfaction
In a cycle of blinding perpetual fulfillment
Without which no art can exist in dreams or reality
Marked up with price tags too high to pay
Marked down by hearts cut open and bled dry
Until the price of poetry is paid

This reminds me of a Vegas Spread by Jimmie the Greek....heads I win, tails you lose....Poetry as Blood Letting....Put down the hammer on this one, PM, the nails are in!

My God man, is Jimmie the Greek still alive? LOL! I remember reading a book by him in the 70's about how to bet on football. But I never won any money with his system and I quit gambling after that experience. I am have been living less than a mile from the Saratoga Race Track for the past 9 months, lol...
Thank you for the interesting comment Turtle! JJ

I wonder if poetry and prose will survive to the next century, if poets will survive as writers or be ashes of wishes. Or if they will just bleed to the ground and disappear, only the daisies testimony to their beauty...Poetryman you should have stayed on in school.

Thanks for commenting grace! I assume you mean as a Teacher's Aide and not a student, LOL! I would not be able to now even if I had, but who knows, maybe if I had, I might have been able to avoid the stroke. But maybes are silent wishes... JJ

LOL, well, you might have been making a smart ass comment and saying I needed to go back to school to learn how to write poetry... HA! I know you wouldn't say that, at least not out in public, lmao, but I've heard worse around this site before. But never from you my dear Grace!!! jj

Poetryman, if this should someday become you, I will most certainly weep. This poem is not only purposeful but worthy to echo on in poetic eternity:) Sigh. . .

Thank you devlin, a wonderful compliment! But death will one day take me down no matter what the future brings, and societies all fall eventually... Perhaps one day in a distant time, someone will unearth a locked box, and inside will be my books of poems, and someone will decide to use them as Teacher's Aides, and I will have come full circle... I really, really like this one! My favorite lines:
"Marked up with price tags too high to pay
Marked down by hearts cut open and blead dry
Until the price of poetry is paid"
