death of a celebrity’s mother
My mother told me
how some footy star’s mother died
and they had a minutes silence on the field
my response was ,“So?”
I’m not really sure why I'm meant to care
death happens, why should the death
of a celebrity's mother make any difference to me?
Her response was to give me
a look of disgust
never mind that I shed tears over the death
of Steve Irwin, or that those World Vision ads
have me flicking the channel to something less
soul-nourishing than people asking me for money
I don’t have, to feed children in far-off Africa
And I truly believe our western culture is insane
that the death of a celebrity or their mother can mean more to us
than the neighbour being wheeled out of a house
in a body bag, at the ripe old age of whatever
both of whom we never knew
What is it about television and gossip mags that makes us think
we know anything about the people we’re confronted with daily
on whatever program or latest literary trash
we happen to give our momentary attention to?
I can’t believe any of it is actually true
So pop open that paparazzi laden magazine
turn on the box reserved now for the lazy and naïve of mind
and drown your soul in meaningless bullshit
don’t you know “someone’s” mother died today?
Yeah… I’m still not caring
