This Song (It's for You)

You showed up in a dream last night
and you were not ok
You never said a word,
but tears were rolling down your face
I didn’t ask you questions,
just held you while you cried
And when I woke, the rain
was pouring down outside

I know that I can’t call you,
How random that would seem
We’re really not that kind of friends,
We only talk in memes.
I’m not the one you’d turn to
if things were going wrong,
But you’re the one who crashed my dream,
so I’m writing you this song.

You’re such a bright light in the world,
I hope you know that’s true
A steady rock, a wise soul,
and I admire you.
But life can blow a gale sometimes
that takes your power out
And even rocks get swept away
within a flood of doubt

I know it’s weird to call you,
How awkward that would seem
That’s not what people do now,
We only talk in memes.
I’m not the one you’d turn to
if things were going wrong
But friend, my heart has open arms,
so I’ll hold you with this song.

This song won’t spill your secrets, or bind you.
I’m trusting that this song will find you.
If you’re wearing a brave face,
this song will see you.
You can turn it off, if you need to.

I’ll probably never call you,
How random that would seem
That isn’t how things work now,
We only talk in memes.
You have people to turn to
when things are going wrong
So reach out for those open arms,
and they’ll hold you like this song.
You’re not alone.
Dear friend, my heart has open arms,
so I’ll hold you with this song.
