Foxes & Wolves
I wondered back then
A long time ago
At fourteen in middle school
A year before the quinceanera I never had
Where I’d be later in life
Everyone my age left middle school
and their teens early
My girlz grew up way too fast
String bikinis
Hickeys on tummies
Laughing in detention
Fights in the restroom
at school or the movie theater
Wasn’t my thing though, never was
I wasn’t scared of fighting
but my mother was a different story
And my friends knew it
They didn’t have to answer to her
I did
But makeup was okay
So I’d help reapply
black eyeliner afterwards
The red pencil one
We’d melt the tip with a lighter
cause it was cool as fuck
God I missed them in high school
We were all baby foxes
back then just living
until it was time
to go home
To our dens
And once there
I’d daydream
If I’d survive my neighborhood
It’s dark side
How it perseveres
Like a beast’s underbelly
Always wanting to be fed with a rumble
So many raids
I remember Lenny telling me once
"When they come they’re
going to earn their paycheck"
And they did
It took three to drag him
handcuffed into the cop car
He howled with fearless
adrenaline the whole time
Like a handcuffed wolf
He came from a family of them
The runt that grew into the alpha
It’s odd watching neighbors
you used to play hide and seek
with grow into dangerous people
And I know now
Years later
Why it never appealed to me
That loop
That chaos
The inside of it
I realized I was too smart for it
I’d learned my surroundings well
Much more the observer
on the outside of it
Always learning what not to do
I outsmarted the echoes
Refusing to be a sad story
In shades of red
Like a fox

This is so beautiful; an aerial view of your youth. The foxes and wolves analogies are magic. Wonderful.

Hi Pink
I'm glad you enjoyed it. All of my female friends in middle school all slowly disappeared. Middle school was the best time of my youth. Unafraid of consequences and living on the edge. But I always never truly stepped over that line.
thanks for the RL and stopping by:)

Every direction isn't for everyone, even barn animals venture into different directions. But the true sign of a wolf is that he will not go easily, rolling over and getting their stomach rubbed. The sign of a true fox is is to smart for the whole lot, eh. Tight

Hey Meme
I was outside when they took him. He caused a whole commotion. Even inside the cop car he still didn't let up. Kicking the door and window. He was laughing, cussing, and howling. It left such an impression still to this day.
Honestly, it looked exhausting. Nah, not for me:)

Hi Crimsin
I was born and raised there. Wouldn't change it for the world.
Mostly cause in the chaos I was never really hurt. Not in a life changing way. You're right - it will, it is:)
Thanks for stopping by for a read and the RL!

Hi PS:)
Hey there amigo. I'm glad you enjoyed the read. My youth was a rollercoaster. hahaha
Middle School was a blast. The best time of my youth.
High School was a drag because so many of my childhood friends left.
I was good-ish. LOL
Always light trouble like ditching school here and there.
Made it to graduation and outta there!!

Hi Willow,
It feels like a lifetime ago. I'm still friends with my best friend from
seventh grade. We know each others kids and everything. Love her to pieces!!
You can absolutely learn from someone else's mistakes. You don't necessarily have to go trough hell to know better. Always listen to the voices inside that tell you to sit back and watch. See how it plays out.
Be smart and don't be a follower.

You did wonderfully for your first! This was open and vivid, retaining the reader's attention throughout the entire verse.

Hi Ahavati:)
Thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm trying to get back into my
longer writing and this was a great feeling. Me stretching in different forms of writing. Tinkering with my mind on how to lay out stories.
I'm glad you enjoyed!!

Hey!
There was always something happening in my neighborhood.
But there were times when we just played. I love the way you put it.
An everyday reel of life! Perfectly said:)

Re. Foxes & Wolves
(I have no dang RLs to give out!)
Speaking of foxes, your avatar! What!
You turned out awesome; Looks and smarts and wit, and generosity... I stay amazed.
This write is a great look back at some defining years of yours, where your thought processes were already mature. Just enough spunkiness to enjoy life, and yet the wisdom to know that our choices can dictate our futures a great deal.
An awesome display of young Del. Who is still quite youthful with her energy and outlook, I must say.
You rock!
And that picture.....You rock my socks off!
Now there is an RL for ya. And yes, I will always highlight you and give you props, and show love. You're my partner in this big world now.

Hey hey hey
We are so much more than RLs baby.
Don't sweat it.
I honestly think they should do away with them
and only go with comments.
I'm still a work in progress baby. But I had a pretty awesome youth. It was fun and carefree considering where I came from. And you do learn from observing. There is something to be said for studying your surroundings. I came out okay:)
Thanks for stopping by big sexy!!!

I must confess I feel humbled when I read such accomplished, intense, magnetically appealing poetry. This is simply awesome in more ways I can count. Also, other than the great, raw storytelling, I liked how you didn't present the reader with a cautionary tale, you never take the moral high ground, just state that you lived and learned while also subtly paying tribute to the chaos and beauty of years that made you into an amazing woman and poet.
This, my friend, is what I'd call a resounding success, one I hope to learn from. Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Mun:)
What a truly gracious comment. I'm humbled at what you read and found in my words. Beauty and chaos. Quite the combo but I've learned life is what you make it. At a certain age you grow up and realize what you want in life and take the necessary steps to make it happen. Writing is a ladder amigo.
One step/word at a time. I'm learning as I go. I'm not college material. Never was. But life has a way of giving you degrees. LOL
Thanks for the RL and your encouraging words:)
It gave me a big toothy smile!

Your poem reminded me of a bad time living in Bellingham, SE6 (South east London). I moved in with my girlfriend (who's now dead unfortunately through alcoholic abuse) but anyway, yeah, during my time living there, I got mugged & we were burgled also but it wasn't all bad. There were lighter moments when we would visit The Glades shopping centre in Bromley. Sometimes we'd go on a mini pub crawl in Beckenham also, which was a little bit more upmarket in the area, lol. My lovely daughter Kelly was born in Lewisham, nearby, so yeah, a little hit 'n' miss but I wouldn't swap those years for the world cos they helped shape me. I tend to steer clear of dodgy characters too ...especially Styxian... no never... he's lovely! Just looks scary sometimes, that's all, lol. I'm gonna give him a big hug the next time I see him, as you do, right? Lol. ;-)

Hi Billy!
I'm so sorry about your ex.
Alcohol can do so much damage mostly cause it's legal.
If you can't monitor yourself it can saturate you.
Our experiences in life do shape us. It's the whole point right?
And your lovely daughter is very luck to have you as her father:)
Hahahahah
I will definitely be giving Styx a smooch and hug when I see him!
But he's someone I wouldn't want to run into in a dark alley - no wait - I totally would want to. hehehehe
later billy!

I think as a piece of confessional poetry, this is a resounding success. I’m currently running a confessional comp on the forum, you’d be more than welcome to enter. No pressure at all.
I like the imagery clash between foxes and wolves. I like to think that they display both sides of the story on display here - the slightly friendlier against the savage. And they all add up to the story here.
Lovely pace to this. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Missy,
Thanks for your encouragement.
When it came to writing this I wanted to make sure
it had my voice talking. It's a lot more personal and
I wanted to challenge myself with it.
I'm always a little gun shy when it comes to comps.
So for you to leave a comment means the world.
Looks like I'm checking out your comp!!
Thanks for the read.
Glad to see you around DUP!!

Great aim, I love the story, how you expressed your thoughts and shared emotions from the past. I hung out with people like that because they were cool but my father's voice always bounced around in my brain when it came to moments of do I ride with them or do I go home an chill. I hung out with them enough to enjoy some of the life but not enough to get caught in the mix.

Hi LJ!
We lived in a small town - it's grown since back in the day.
Everyone knew everyone. It was hard to get away with anything!! LOL
There were so many fun times with my friends when I was in middle school. Life got complicated as we got older. Different directions pulling all of us apart. But it was great walking that line of participation. hahaha

This is sincerely such a treat to read. I love poetry like this. As a woman, who grew up in a poor urban neighborhood surrounded by criminals and the mob, this is so relatable and I love that when reading it I can feel my inner teenager wanting to be your friend, understanding where your thoughts are coming from, seeing it through your eyes. Well done girl, this is where it’s at. Storytelling, word slinging, heartbeat.

Hello:)
Thank you so much for that awesome comment!!
Made my day and it's been a miserable one with this current heat wave.
There was something primal about my neighborhood.
You never knew when something was going to happen.
And of course it was always right next door. Still that way to this day. But it sharpened my senses for the better. If I can survive here - I can survive anywhere. Truth!
And we'd totally would have been friends. Middle school was the best time in my life because all of my friends were there.
Everyone stared disappearing freshman year.
But I still hang with my best friend that I've known since 7th grade:)
She's my rock - immovable!
