Straw Paper

Verse 1
Midnight, the city is cold and still
trying to sit here and get my fill
on the stale coffee and cigarettes
as the waitress places her bets
am I or am I not a big tipper?
I'm only here to remember you, little dipper
the burning star in my midnight sky
the one who said goodbye

Chorus
It was cold when we met, cold so cold
yet you were so warm, so warm to hold
I begged and begged for God to stop
but time was something I could not cop
and now I sit here, our spot our spot
looking out to see nothing but raindrops

Verse 2
Paid tabs and empty threats
waitress finally settled the bets
the cheap floor and familiar air
smoke hanging like we used to, without a care
time to head back home, to the streets
my hands shake as the door it meets

Chorus
It was cold when we met, cold so cold
yet you were so warm, so warm to hold
I begged and begged for God to stop
but time was something I could not cop
and now I sit here, our spot our spot
looking out to see nothing but raindrops

Verse 3
Cold night out tonight, maybe grab a coat
this ship is sinking slowly, find yourself a new boat
no safe harbors to be found
just shipwrecked treasures underground
the service playing in my head
Is so much better than the words you said
telling me goodbye with your smile
takes it's toll on a heart after awhile
curiosity gives way to understanding
as the midnight skies become, demanding
I look up and see, the stars at last
reminding me that I too will survive my past

Chorus
It was cold when we met, cold so cold
yet you were so warm, so warm to hold
I begged and begged for God to stop
but time was something I could not cop
and now I sit here, our spot our spot
looking out to see nothing but raindrops
