Second Grade

I’ve always thought of my aunt more like a big sister
She’s twelve years older and we always have great talks
She used to be the one to pick me up from school
Even though it was only like a two block walk

One afternoon we had a coloring assignment
I remember I had lagged trying to finish it all
It was me and another kid left in the classroom
And the assignment: coloring a cow I clearly recall

But my aunty’s patience that afternoon was wearing thin
She went over to the classroom telling me to hurry
And I, perhaps with my ADD or OCD or my little quirks
Felt like I had to finish all the work and began to worry

So I grabbed the nearest crayon and went crazy
Going fast trying to stay within the lines somehow
Then when I finished my aunt smiled looking at me
And said “Wow, I’ve never seen a purple cow”
