tearsong―the reason i sing
“Sometimes we have to soak ourselves in the tears and fears
of the past to water our future gardens.”―Suzy Kassem
what in heaven's name
can i do with tears?
the more they fall,
the more my melodies
come forth
from painful aquifers
to comfort
my maladies.
so now i see the light!
tears are shed
to wash the tragedies
of my pain.
but what can i do
when i've cried out
all my tears
and the pain is still
as hot as hell?
just before death's
final conquest,
i sing my old melodies
and they transform
my tearless weeping
into joyful singing.
for melodies,
when bitter tears
are spent,
transcend
the arid heart
to ember
where new springs
are pregnant
with tears of joy
that wash away
the stains
of the tears
of stale pains,
so they may
never rise again.
