Tangential travels; love's desolation

If I met you
on this journey

All aboard this train of thought
intertwining time
betwixt barren remoteness
explorers scouting out need
whistling discovery of secreted landscapes

Across desolate plains
windswept valleys;
where jackals wander
and vultures glide their
searching glides

We'd travel through
sleeping towns
where at the dead end of the day
dust swirls
curling apricot twirls

Sparks sending scatter
from greased tracks
as carriages slip into a breath of darkness
the night would marvel us
roll in,
blanket our burdens
smothering turbid atmosphere

Would we have fallen in love
while teasing against
our tender dystopian backdrop,
made promises,
changed trajectories
or perhaps pierced
each other's pristine hearts...

Fate whispers answers
floats all around us
scenting sanguine air
perfuming possibility
with tastes of honeyed destiny

The sun beats down
in maddening meter
casting shadows
cracking tarmac
in a noon time frenzy

I travel on
into an unknown future
destination unclear
unfair is your echo
incessantly
drumming

Was there ever any way
to know for sure
would you have stayed there
holding us
riding into the night
readying to lay
in lifelong candlelight

if only

I had met you
on that
journey
