Wistful (NaPoWriMo 2022 #11)

I thought
I heard your voice
and that song,
that melancholy song
that you would
idly sing,
staring at nothing
while wearing a smile
to turn even
bleak days
into paradise,
and enchant
the mundane
with magic and splendour.
I thought again
of your smile
that smile,
that would shrug off sadness
and anguish's
outgrown cloak,
with joyous cheeks
that nudged eyelashes sunwards,
and I thought of how nice
how very nice
it would be to see that smile again.

Author's Note
Entry 11 for NaPoWriMo 2022.
A memory of a person and smile, that never existed; an imagined scene. -I shied away from adding such a line in the poem as I felt it would tip from bittersweet into sad or despairing.
