Bowing To The Calling Of The Past...
Thus began a rich history of Black inventors who were able to patent their genius creations that continue to have an effect on your everyday life. Here are a few of the most commonly used among them
Madam C.J. Walker
Madam C.J. Walker invented an innovative line of African American hair care products in 1905 that led to her distinction as one of America’s first self-made millionaires
Thomas L. Jennings
He invented a process for dry-cleaning delicate clothing known as “dry-scouring.” Jennings applied for a patent in 1820 and received his history-making approval the following year
Benjamin Banneker
Called the "first African American inventor": Crop irrigation system. During the revolutionary war, wheat grown on a farm designed by Banneker prevented U.S. troops from starving.
Bessie Blount
Tube feeding system for the disabled: her inventions made the lives of soldiers disabled in World War II more independent. Purchased by the French government.
Lewis Howard Latimer
Invented and patented an incandescent light bulb with a carbon filament in 1881. An engineer for the Edison Company, Latimer invented the carbon filament, thus making the light bulb practical.
Garrett Augustus Morgan
Among his inventions was an early traffic signal, that greatly improved safety on America's streets and roadways.
Ms. Lyda D. Newman
In 1898 patented the first hairbrush with synthetic bristles. Soon thereafter, two other African American inventors, Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Walker and Marjorie Joyner revolutionized hair-care and created an industry.
Alexander Miles
Anyone who’s ridden modern elevators has Alexander Miles to thank for the stair alternative’s automatic doors. Prior to his design’s 1867 patent, riders had to manually open and close two sets of doors when entering and exiting elevator cars
Dr. Patricia Bath
She became the first female African American medical doctor to receive a medical patent when she invented a laser cataract treatment device called a Laserphaco Probe in 1986
