as so often happens
she just proved that old adage
{maybe it's just a joke...I don't know}
but it's so frequent I think it should be
...more than just accepted as a maxim
I opened my mouth
& my mother came out
it used to drive her crazy
not so much anymore
as she's seeing firsthand
the wisdom in what she's saying
was once heard emitting from my lips...previously
& sometimes we speak...
...in stereo
{I giggle}
while she rolls her eyes & purses her lips ...

Gods and Kings
It's bedtime for Bonzo and Hector Alonzo, Ronald Reagan didn't make it out of bed
So we stayed there all day watching Pretty Woman with that rug on top of Hector Alonzo's head
Dancing in circles listening to the Go-Go's, waiting for that moment we'ed all be dead
Raging and screaming while we did nothing, raging and screaming until the end
Dismayed by this ending and there is always an ending
Step to the side
their story is about to begin
So get over the ashes that cleave to the wind
It's suppertime for Gumby a...

Argonne Rebels
Go, you Rebels!
The summers of youth are a distant memory
Hot days under the sun
Endless rehearsals
Drill after drill
But at night under the stadium lights
The screams and applause from the crowds
Had an electric energy
Oh those must’ve been some glorious days
There is an echo that travels throughout time
The wall of sound from brass
The thunder of drums
Flags waving in the wind
Rifles tossed in the air
But what reverberates aside from the music and sight
More than the color and pageantry

Myth Haikus
Thoth
Scroll of stars unfolds,
wisdom flows through measured time.
Eye records it all.
Gilgamesh
Walls rise to the sky,
friendship forged, yet doomed to fade.
Mortals seek their name.
Tupã
Thunder splits the night,
roaring whispers through the storm.
Creation takes breath.
Amaterazu
Hidden in her cave,
sunlight fades, the world grows cold.
Hope draws her to dance.
Shango
Drums thunder the sky,
lightning splits the heavens wide. ...

Neighbors
We fucked ourselves
screwed the pooch
prayed to the god of money
showered us with love and praise
in the land of milk and honey
we waited and we waited
for the money to fall
from a sky of amber waves
thought dancing with the devil
would get us what we need
the walls been breached
your souls been sold
for gold and rotted seed
i look to my neighbor
think to myself
does he bleed like i bleed
shame on you shame on me
maybe its time for shame to leave
it's my neighbor again
he's bust through the door ...

Dating is Dated (or should be)
Much like kindergarten
prepares children for childhood
the 1950s model of dating
prepared young men and women for their adult roles.
In the old days
the man was the provider
so he paid on dates.
The woman took great care with her appearance,
a crucial part of her role.
Sometimes the man ordered for the woman in restaurants
without even consulting her.
I wouldn't have survived.
"The lady will have the salmon"
"Eww! I will not. I HATE fish!"
That would have...

Walls
Look at these walls. They’re everywhere decreed.
Inside me. Inside you. Between us too.
‘tween my neighbors and me, walls intercede.
Houses of walls, fences blocking the view.
South at the border they build chunks of walls.
Hate chunks and fear chunks materialized
Steely expressions of bigoted drawls.
Essence of lynch mobs surrealialized.
A dike is a wall. It holds back the sea
Minds can hold walls that don’t need installing.
Billionaire dikes holding back you and me.
They mask the good; they hide the appalling.

Sensitive Heels
In ancient lands where heroes tread,
Achilles and Patroclus, their love widespread.
Through Trojan War, their bond was bold,
a tale of hearts, both fierce and gold.
With Troy behind, they journeyed on.
Their love's bright flame, a blazing dawn.
Olympic Gods, with hearts so kind,
bestowed their blessing fates entwined.
On fields of Elysium they roamed,
in laughter, joy, their spirits honed.
Achilles' strength and Patroclus' grace.
A love eternal, time can't erase.

Knights stall around the table
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Error, error and that's all
Horror, terror and a fall
Warriors attend a call
Summoning in a mall
Everyone's a pall
Holly grail ball
Stand tall

Priestesses
Guardians of the flame,
sacred vows of purity,
to silent lives constrained.
Chaste in ancient Greece,
virgins bound by duty's chain,
faithful to the peace.
Under the temple's gaze,
Vestal's hearts in shadows dwell,
freedom's distant haze.
Solemn and restrained
lives of the Vestal Virgins
bound by their sacred duties
and so imposed virginity.

Be choosy about change
Old is gold
Let this be told
for the 'good old days'
had some good old ways
So I'd rather not exchange
old lamps for new
lest I suffer like in Aladdin's tale
and loose everything of value
For if I lose my old lamps
I've no genie to restore my loss
So beware of modernist shams
Don't let change be your boss
The medieval days of extended families
when elders were respected
both for stories and homilies,
Passed on oral tradition
cultural preservation
You should know best...
