I Went to see a Customer
It had been 18 months
He was out with surgery
Frigging pandemic too
He asked me to come
When I greet men
It's usually an elbow bump
Today we shook hands
We toured his shop
Did our business
Made a list
Then talked some
It was then time for me to leave
I don't think he wanted me to go
It was an emotional moment
Sales calls are rarely emotional
This one stayed with me
He was out with surgery
Frigging pandemic too
He asked me to come
When I greet men
It's usually an elbow bump
Today we shook hands
We toured his shop
Did our business
Made a list
Then talked some
It was then time for me to leave
I don't think he wanted me to go
It was an emotional moment
Sales calls are rarely emotional
This one stayed with me
Author's Note
My job is outside sales and making relationships. I have many years with a lot of my customers. Sometimes a sales call is not about what I sell. It's about life and connection. I value that ....

You sure hit the nail on the head
The relationship and mutual trust is everything
My customers are not my friends but sometimes i wish they were ...
I appreciate your comment
To have lived this career as well you know how hard it is to keep it all going
Thanks Ted

My job has a lot of frustration to it. Its difficult pleasing people and often there are a lot of issues to solve. This call makes it worthwhile. Person to person. One moment at a time.

*Elbow bump; I'm notorious for this and have been before the paranoia set in. If they don't reciprocate, just act like you meant to scratch your nose. Awkwardness spared.
And I totally get the theme and all about what you wrote. I used to be a bartender, and "customer service" is obviously paramount to sales/tips. But once in awhile, you run into the ones who just seem to matter more. It's all part of the human condition.
Don't lose your human touch. It's worth keeping.

Yes, the human touch
That's what it's all about Styxian
Sometimes you get great poems out of moments like this
Being a bartender I'm sure you've seen and heard it all
I have too
The sales rep is business, psychology, acting, trust all rolled into one.
People think it's easy because it's not 9 to 5 in an office
It's actually 24/7 because people are depending on you to come through for them. It creeps into your personal life
Great comment
Thanks

It is so important to love what you do. Many aren't fortunate to have a job they even want to go to and it shows in how they treat their co workers and customers. This poem shows more than a good worker it shows the very nature of who you are.

I can’t say I love my job but I appreciate the relationship aspect. If you work hard and stay in front of your customers it can be a good living for a self starter which I consider myself …,

Hey PS!!
I have no doubt you are a self starter. Most ambitious people are. I work at a museum which was hit really hard in the pandemic. People crave human interaction and reaction. The museum is flooded with people now wanting to get on living. Thank god!! I'm sure you made his day shaking his hand.
Enjoyed the human experience of this read. Smiled when reading.

I know sales is not just about presentation and product but it really is about building relationships and rapport. I’m sure reconnecting with folks now takes a on new level.

The product is important but the relationships and trust are the whole ball of wax. I was really struck by this re-connection. Hence this poem
