Ash Dreams
Lost in stolen quick glances and coy smiles
The dreamer goes off into another trance
But this time it burns harder and longer
Knowing all this has a ghost of a chance
But the dreamer lingers amidst fantasies
The all too familiar place of blissful reveries
There, dwelling for decades and centuries
Freely captive in a realm of false memories
And when the desire appears to catch fire
The flames burn and churn without control
All the while the dreamer sits lonely, calmly
Amidst vivid sparks embedded in the soul
There are no tears or fears, just a nostalgic heart
A stillness in the depths as if frozen or numb
But the dreamer seems happy amidst ash dreams
Knowing, understanding the day will never come

That was quite moving, especially these lines, evoking a disconnect with time that contributes to the cycle of imprisonment.

Thank you JB (and for the RL as well).
Time moves differently for some, and they choose to dwell there in the fantasy of it all.

This resonates with me in such an emotionally elemental way, the metaphors touching into such love and loss, the echoes and shadows of remembrance. Some moments erupt in a sea of stillness, stretching in either direction from the crisis core.

Daniel, thank you very much for your comments and RL.
This was a tough write for me, getting into a certain mindset and recalling certain emotions. In the end, it worked out for me, but I wonder about those who still deal with those feelings.

I hear you. Shadows lengthen over time, I suppose, that which might have been visits us in quiet moments. I tell myself what is meant to be, will be.

Dear W,
Unrequited love comes in many forms these days. This phrase
“ There are no tears or fears, just a nostalgic heart” for me, is the touchstone of the write as it symbolizes the release of pain in not being loved in the same way as you gave love. A reflection on whatever it might/could have been. This poem has a depth of reflection that I can’t be compartmentalized because there are so many layers to love. I love the title. Ash Dreams. Burned to purity. Stunning write. H🌷

Honoria, thank you for commenting and for your RL addition.
That line at first didn't make sense to me, but it was the thing where I felt like I knew what and who I had been all along. Some choose to dwell in the pain, others can remember fondly, those still chasing, dreaming the impossible will stay in the idyllic place for a long time.

Re. Ash Dreams
I think the idea of kinda being ok with being lost within a version of unrequited love's purgatory, is achingly sad and simultaneously beautiful. We all understand it, we can wholly sympathize and can probably even utter under our breath,"There but for the grace of God, go I" We would like to think we'd be fully aware of ourselves and never be caught within such a "purgatory"... but it's easier said ... In my opinion. Some of THE harshest pain is derived from loving someone who doesn't love you in return. It's soul crushing and can completely change a person along with their whole life's trajectory.... it's THAT powerful. As is this wonderfully penned, write, Walter.
Such brilliance.... you hit this one outta the park.
Outstanding job!

Blue, thank you for that wonderful comment and for adding to your RL.
The subject of unrequited love has always fascinated me. At one point or another, we have all felt this way or know someone is going through it. Purgatory is the perfect way to describe it, because although it burns and hurts, it also inspires.

Dreams can be better than reality, even though we know it is unattainable, you captured that, love the title :)

PR, thank you for comment.
Yes, dreams are the perfect escape from the harsh reality, and while in them, time seems to fly by fast.
