Father and Son
father and son
locked
in vicious cycles
the sins of the elder
become the legacy
of rapt eyes
and keen ears
anger transferred
by proximity
to the eager child
my eyes burn
every time the boy
(now a man)
takes that familiar
stance
he knows it’s meant
to intimidate
voices rising,
reaching fevered pitch
as one lists for the other
both their transgressions
my throat aches
for the son,
setting his boundaries
in stone
standing
his
ground
loving your father
shouldn’t be this hard

Wow, oh wow, Luna 💔
This is very impactful... kids are like innocent little sponges, and they soak up all the energy around them. It's sad to see them model after bad or violent behaviors from seeing them used by their parents.
"anger transferred
by proximity
to the eager child"
A child raised with violence and fighting will inevitably model after some of these bad behaviors... The way you said viscious cycles, and "the sins of the elder becomes the legacy", it makes me think about how important it is that we sort out our bad behaviors when we have children to avoid projecting them onto them.
The end hit really hard... It's heartbreaking that kids who grow up in houses with lots of abuse and domestic violence never get to experience the purity of love without the violence, and may never have a functional family relationship. It's an endless cycle too, and can carry on for generations, unless someone strong enough decides to break the cycle.
Powerful writing... Keep up the great work 🙏

It was quite a poignant read. It's really beautiful to see how simply you carve out such a strident tale of lifelong abasement. Don't know exactly why, but I sort of get a Anna Swir like vibe reading this poetry. Kudos to you for this amazing poetry!

Unfortunately, family curses transfer between generations, and last for generations until broken. I feel for the boy too; he most likely struggles with a guilt complex which follows actions not of self; but, something associated with negative patterns which accumulate over time. If anyone can shed light on this very real fact, it's you, my friend.
I will hold the breaking in my thoughts for you; and the restroation of peace among those who should love one another without effort. xo

Thank you so much, Ahavati. Patterns like this are among the hardest to break and require willingness to be uncomfortable for a bit. Your kind words are always appreciated 💜.

Dear L,
I’ve had to let this one percolate it’s so incredibly personal. Impenetrable human chains and cycles are ferocious and heartbreaking. Watching it as a by stander that can’t participate in its destruction is unbearable and a life long sentence. Your first person narrative is a bullseye. The pain and angst trying to guide a relationship of this nature requires a super power and even then your closing lines tell all- sometimes not even wearing Superman’s cape can help. However, where there is life there is hope and every positive energy I have available will be sent so the parties in this write that they will achieve a peace to heal and smash that chain. It’s a beautifully written piece with such introspection, I find I’m rather weepy. H🌷

I have watched this cycle play out through a couple of generations now, and it’s always my hope that one or the other will find the strength to do what’s necessary to break this cycle. I watched it passed down while growing up and then again in my own house (we turn to what we know, until we know better, yeah?), and it’s always like being aboard a diving plane you didn’t even buy a ticket to ride. I pray always that reconciliation between these fathers and sons finds its way to the forefront before they have wounds that are too deep to heal.
Thank you so much for sharing your insight. We don’t talk about these things often enough 💜.
