Memorial
Author's Note
Based on something my father told me when I asked him how it felt when the Vietnam war ended. He said, "War never ends for a soldier." I'm glad his finally did.

The physical war might be over, it's the one in their head that they can never forget ....

Excellent in its contrast.
❤📝
And it also inspired me to research how the the poppy became the symbol of rememberence; its origins lie in poetry!

Oh goodness! My Canadianness is showing. I thought everyone knew about the poppy, but I guess it's only here that we learn that poem & story every November in school.... "In Flanders Fields" - look it up, you'll be glad you did. It's lovely, just like this image and quote is. ❤

Yes, sorry, I was thinking you had quoted your father but I see it's not quite the same. Wasn't quite sure of the correct term for a lovely one-sentence poem!

No problem, BT. I was quite paranoid about posting this thought in case I'd read it somewhere so googled to make sure ( I do that a lot! ).

Yup, he’s right.. you may forget the war, but you never forget the guys you flew with and got shot down...trust me on that! Very well done and great timing.

Dear A,
When I read pieces like this I’m always gobsmacked by how self absorbed I am. Then I feel like a complete ass. I think for me to survive this world I have to keep my head buried half way so my fears of most everything don’t ride rough shod. I can’t fathom what your father endured phyisically let alone mentally after the VN war, especially given its incendiary political views of that era. I do know this- anyone willing to sacrifice their life for mine so I can keep my head half buried will always be my hero/heroine. H 🌷

Thank you, Honoria. Much appreciated. Particularly the references to my father. ❤

There is nothing awe-inspiring, like this. When so few words are capable of wisdom, imagination, and poignant irony. May your father be at peace.
