Escape

We fought to see the sun again
Fought to see our loves again
The decision was unconsciously made then
As we waited to greet death as an old friend

The pain was so deep we thought we would give in
Fear great enough to overwhelm in the end
But the fresh air taken in those first few seconds
Was all we could think of in that pit of oppression

Right words spoken in the depth of madness
Sadness and loneliness used as weapons
Turning into what would most likely succeed
Get out get out
A mantra playing in the back of our feed

Force was our last plan to get out
Whether we survived wasn't something to worry about
Cause chains bore crevices into our souls
But never enough to leave lasting sores

Broken became shards of dangerous edges
The act so good he made recurring pledges
The composer became an actor in our play
As we fed him pieces of himself every day

The shine beyond our freedom was always closer
If he knew what lived inside he wouldn't have chosen her
For the first sign of trust gave us an open shot
One that we took without a second thought

The first push to that door showed a rising sun
All the things we took for granted like the wind in our hair as we'd run
The pain in our lungs as we searched for a car
Down a lonely road that was eight miles too far

Blood dried on our hands as we hoped for an angel
It was an old pastor that became our drive by miracle
Every night we think of the smell of pine
All the scents from that harrowing time
But most of all that simple taste
Of freedom I'd forgotten to appreciate.
