Olde Faces
( after Carol Ann Duffy )
All for this instant, literally—a glimpse
of egress from poverty and disease
riddling an ignored thread of being—
this haversack of bleeding womb
birthing a gestating soul
It is said your life regresses
moments before death;
but, I believe it’s our Spirit, retracting—
a rubber band, returning
to the bright point of its origin
before expanding outward again
From our final moment of happiness
to the first love we experienced
our esprit instantaneously revisits—
commending to history memories
to be recalled instinctively upon necessity—
Actions we burgeon from, or mimic
become future choices of the collective
seeking past connections—olde faces
and places etched within the stories
of our double-helixed DNA
I was beautiful and intelligent once, but
It is finished—this prolonged life
Since I took my first breath
I anticipated this second, leaving behind
the degradation of an aging society—
so come—come quickly—because
I have grown so cold lying in wait
~

I enjoyed the usage of the word "esprit" that greatly complemented "Spirit". The consonance and assonance was off the charts; you honored the inspiration poem of Duffy's with your subtle rhyming.
That was the easiest poem I've ever listened to; production-wise it was effortlessly amazing from the words themselves to the voice and music.
That was the hardest poem I've ever listened to; I was there in the moment and still have tears in my eyes an hour later. This is the only poem that has ever moved me like this; probably because I'm too close to separate myself from the writer.

This is magnificient. I really don't have too much too add to that because language is very limited when comes to feeling and emotion expressed

No; more like decrepit isolation. You know the plight of the old. . .many times forgotten. Thank you.

Oh my goodness
I lie back and feel myself drifting comfortably into the cosmos
No abyss
But a reconnection

I started reading some of her poems, and this one, History was one of my favorites. It can be interpreted a couple different ways, I think, one of the forgetting and ignoring of history by those outside the old woman's house, and then the rich memories of the woman herself. Either way, I read it as an irony. But your interpretation imparts a dignity to age and a purpose despite what the world observes, an honoring of wisdom and age. Your poems have a balancing effect, often, softening the harsh messages of some classic poems, its uplifting to read that, that the wisdom embued in a classic poem finds a resolution in being read and understood and translated with knowledge. I'm still working on something :)

Thank you, PR. I appreciate that observation. . .it's exactly along the lines I was thinking after reading History ( which is one of my favorites too ). Happy you picked up on the balancing, it's something very important to me in all aspects of my life, even writing.
I cannot wait to read yours. I figured you were working on something!

For me, this is bitter-sweet. The moment of dread can also be the moment of hope, but whichever way the tide turns with more swing, the inevitable will have its way. Resignation to the inescapable must be redemptive in its own right.
Thanks for sharing these deep insights, Ahavati. They are humbling to every willing soul.

Thank you, cabcool. I love your interpretation of this piece. It does seem we search for the past while living, doesn't it?
Much appreciated.

If we spend all our present searching for our past, then our futile future will be a time of searching for the identity that we have lost during our sojourn in the faceless wilderness. We should, therefore, live NOW and we will still have a past to leave behind us.
