On Selflessness
What if true selflessness doesn’t exist?
When you do something out of the kindness of your heart,
Does it not give you a good feeling inside?
A rush of dopamine, perhaps?
A dose of oxytocin?
The happy chemicals
that flood your brain,
Could put a smile on anyone’s face!
So, when you do something out of the kindness of your heart,
Is it really an act of selflessness?
Or is it the chemical reward you chase?
So, you want to save the planet, do you?
Is it because you really care
about the planet?
Or is it because you care about yourself,
And you don’t want to lose the things you are attached to?
Because this IS your only home
With many things you’ve grown to love–
So, when you work to make the planet a better place,
Is it really about helping the planet?
Or is it about helping yourself?
Could a seemingly generous, beautiful thing?
Actually be an act of self-gratification?
When you do something out of the kindness of your heart,
Does it not give you a good feeling inside?
A rush of dopamine, perhaps?
A dose of oxytocin?
The happy chemicals
that flood your brain,
Could put a smile on anyone’s face!

Author's Note
Philosophical bit on selfless...I think too much :P
I'm just grateful that many people are driven to do good things in an attempt to be good and selfless!
Again, not really exactly a poem...

This is quite the philosophy of Selflessness NewB.
You have a great point. At this time in my life, I'll take kindness in any form.
There's a quote I heard once. " Do not mistake my kindness as my weakness."
In other words, don't allow others to treat you like a door mat.
✌🌻

Great I rate it truth. This is something that I have understood. If a person does something because it makes them feel good. It's for self gratification I helped people in the past. And gained no good feeling from it. I did it from the compassion in my heart. And at the moment I was in a position to do so. Most time when you don't sacrifice anything to help. You will feel good about it. Yet when you sacrifice to help. It comes at a price that leaves you with less. And no good feeling comes from it. If a millionaire gives charity of a hundred bucks. He gets a good feeling from it. But if a poor man gives fifty of that 100 to a poor man. Who has given more. Because the reality is the rich man didn't need it. The poor man needed it more. And the poorer needed it more. The poor man sacrificed because he can identify with the other mans feelings and condition. So he sacrificed out of what he had. And only feeling he got, was his humanity and compassion. Jesus didn't smile on his way to the cross. To sacrifice his life to save humanity. He had no good feeling on that cross. He felt sad and forsaken. When some one is willing to suffer to help someone else. Thats a selfless act. Thank you. Keep going

love this piece of awareness of an kindred beautiful soul to do from your heart is not selfishness as is not looking for anything in return is not selfish, yet it is those who do this only looking for something back in return now that is selfishness at its finest for doing something that should be done out of the kindness of the heart as a human being that really and truly cares about humanity nicely spilled...respect poetess

Re. On Selflessness
I don’t think it’s selfish to give of yourself, knowing that it will make you feel good. A truly selfish person would never spend any amount of time performing acts of kindness for a personal feel-good feeling. They would grow tired and bored of not receiving something from others in return.
A true mark of selflessness is giving without blabbing. If a person needs to let others know of their selflessness, they are merely performing the act for praise and/or validation.
Thought provoking, NB.

The self-gratification is indeed an incentive. But whatever it takes, I suppose. As long as it gets benign results. Still, the motivation may be questionable. This shows deep thought, framed by fine writing.

Selfishness is hard to understand . It can be difficult to see. It can be hard to find that hope and dream you can think of.

I thought about this recently myself. Your observation pretty much matches mine.
