The Ugly Truth

One valuable lesson I've learned in this life
That I wasn't taught and I never read
Is that monsters don't play only at night
And they hide underneath no one's bed
They're neither ugly nor are they hairy
They haven't got razor sharp teeth
The thing that makes them most scary
Is the fact that they look much like me

So should it ever come to pass
That you chance upon something at night
That is unable to remove its "mask"
While cowering back from the light
Do not allow yourself to run
Stand strong in the face of the beast
You may find it's out to hurt no one
And it's the one wanting to retreat

The perception the world has adopted
Is that things are just as they appear
These people are those who are caustic
They are the ones we should fear
They are capable of unspeakable things
They could easily skin you alive
Uncaring of consequence their actions bring
So long as they get theirs in life
You could not even comprehend
The things they've done or will do
Unless you were to witness first hand
Then you'd see them as monsters too
