#MeToo Complications
Feeling light and debonair
he threw all caution to the air
and strode across the ballroom floor
to ask again to dance some more
and she said “spontaneity
frivolity and gaiety
are only fine when you’re mature -
your body-language makes me sure
your youtube moves are just a hack…”;
refusing him she turned her back
which he accepted gracefully
was now the way things have to be
for in these days of hash-me-too
one treads on eggshells with the view
that asking for a hand in dance
is fraught with complications, chance
the one who’s asked suspects a move
that is not clean, and so to prove
requests have motives simple, pure
the one approached effects the cure
conflicted by polite requests
to analyse intentions vexed
and so distorted it becomes
with conversation going numb
that courtship is a dying art
where neither party knows their part
and simple fun of girl-meets-boy
is agonisingly destroyed.

Author's Note
After reading a load of Hilaire Belloc, A.A. Milne and G.K Chesterton, it got me wondering how the upper middle classes of their era (1900s-1940s) would assess #MeToo.

I only partially understand your spill 'cos I'm not exactly sure what #metoo means ... yes, I've seen the hastag but made no effort to try and get a handle on it. I remember when people started wearing rubber bracelets that they vowed to never take off ... I never bothered to learn what they meant either and they seem to have gone away ...

Thanks for visiting again AB.
Perhaps the best way to get a quick lowdown on #MeToo is the wiki page on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_Too_movement
(I can't remember the rubber bracelets thing)

I can definitely hear Milne's voice in this! It was delightful and yet offset by a mature observation. You have an excellent reading voice, Josh.
Is that your painting in the video? I would enjoy seeing an enlarged version. It's almost Klimt-esque in pattern, and Chagall-esque in design/palette.

Thank you A; I realise I was dealing with a hot potato so humour was the only way. I'm practicing my reading voice for by reciting channel; it's a really interesting process.
The painting; yes, one of mine. I'm very taken with your associations. I have sent you a bigger file of it.

ah this is a beautiful gem. So well crafted with a classic flair.
yes the art of courtship has always been complicated, probably now more than ever lol
Great poem Josh, I much enjoyed your read and tone in the vid.

Really glad you enjoyed it Layla. I was brought up on 1930s/40s music-hall theatre via my mother who was always quoting sing-song ditties, Shakespeare, and other gems of that era.

Thanks BK. I hope it doesn't get as bad as you picture; that would be another aspect of divide-and-rule driving a wedge into our lives.

The cheek and fluidity of it's eloquence and rhyme made me smile the whole way through. Well rendered and intoned Josh. <3

Glad an element of British humour translates across the Atlantic, Daniel. It's a serious issue but can so easily get bogged down in head-to-head antagonism - that's why I believe humour-in-poetry should rise to the occasion.

I find Chesterton wrong in so many ways
and yet I love father brown and his essays

Chesterton is an quite a mix with a huge output (have just checked in wiki). I first came a cross him as a teenage with a quote to the effect of 'if people stop believing in God, they will believe in anything' - and some of the 'anythings' in today's world can seem pretty scary.
You love his essays - he wrote over 4,000 of them - how far have you got? :))

Dear J,
A wonderful read from start to finish. Gentle, wistful, reminiscent of a past lost to history. I felt as though I was a character actress in a 1940’s black and white movie. I loved it.
Your painting is excellent and quite interesting in style. Ahavati see’s Klimt and Chagall. I kind of see a bit of Seurat and some pointillism, but the eyes are going and my screen is small so that may be a total miss. The write, however, excellent! H🌷

Thank you Honoria; and for the RL. Glad it brought back a nice memory.
(If you want the painting with a bigger file, PM me with an email address and I'll send it to you. I did so for Ahavati. Pics are limited to 100KB on DUP so it goes all pixelly when enlarged; the original is 1.5+MB).

I found this to be very entertaining, but can't say with any certainty it was Hilaire-ious. There really is a lot of fun being sucked out of this world, creating a vacuum that is drawing in ... well ... Boris and Donald. Strange.

Thank you for the read - and Magnetron's RL appreciation.
"There really is a lot of fun being sucked out of this world, creating a vacuum that is drawing in ... well ... Boris and Donald. Strange."
It is a wierd time. Moves are afoot to have a vote of no confidence in him & his government this week; in which case by the end of the week he won't be prime-minister any more. I also see "impeachment" is a trending word at the mo'. Me, got to keep my head down and get ready for the olive-harvest (60 trees).
