Opossum in Brooklyn - Miscellaneous Life Updated

Opossum is a marsupial!  One of only three living in America. They are also the most misunderstood species here because of their looks ( they can appear frightening, particularly when they hiss ).   They're very valuable to the ecosystem, and kill at least 5000 ticks in a single season.  They have the demeanor of a feral cat.  

We have tons down here - love to see them carry their young on their back.

My neighbor rescued a baby that fell off its mothers back in Spring.  It was so sweet. Like most animals, it depends on how they're raised.

Possums are cool! My daughter thinks they're cute...not sure why. But they have their own charm.

I LIVED IN BROOKLYN NYC DON'T MUCH SURPRISE ME AS FAR AS WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE...BUT A OPOSSUM WHATS NEXT IN THE UNDERGROUND OF THE CITY LIFE

This would have been the biggest rat I've ever seen but opossum is what it was

Like raccoons and coyotes, they adapt easily to city life. I see them on a regular bases here. Yes, normally only active at night, but will venture out in daylight if hungry enough, or disturbed. They will pretend to be dead at times to deter attention, but be careful, if cornered or provoked they will bite and then come the rabies shots. We have live trapped many in the past and released them in the country when they became a nuisance in the area. Like vultures, they also serve as part of natures clean up crew.

No, have visited there several times, mostly in Manhattan as we've had two grandsons attend college there. I'm in Marion, IN, small city NE of Indianapolis, and spent 23 years working with the Dept. of Nat'l Resources before retiring from it.

Well, I'm not sure. How do feel about a severe shortage of sadomasochists, though there is an abundance of plain old masochists, like those who were born here and haven't left.

Yeah, weird sighting.  I was just going about my business and this thing appeared.  In the wilds of Brooklyn no less

the first time I saw an opossum I thought it was a statue it was there frozen sitting one my fence it was playing possum lol... neat that you got to see on they are interesting creatures... on being rodent I'm unsure...

Learned this on Public Radio's game show, Wait Wait, Dont Tell Me". In the section where you were given three stories and the guest had to pick out the true one...well this was the true story. The opossums sex was so freaking loud and inhuman sounding that it scared the crap out the couple living in the house  as the opossums were getting it on in the bushes of their yard.
