Dreaming

I'm surrounded by wildflowers
And a sky that's blue
I look into the distance
And am glad to see you're here too
Because this is a safe place
It had been so long
I'd forgotten the sunny look of your face
I pick myself up
Towards you I begin to run
A dark cloud rolls in
And consumes the shining sun
As the sky begins to turn
The life surrounding us
Is beginning to burn
The sky opens up
A downpour ensues
But it cannot help the trees
Scorched at the roots
I scratch, claw, and crawl
To get closer to you
I give it my all
But no matter how fast I run
Or how hard I try
You are out of my reach
Ruled by this invisible divide
This is supposed to be a safe place to be
A place where it is only
You and me
As we continue to fight
Smoke and fire
Are the only things within our sight
Exhausted, I collapse on the ground
The wind whips, the fire crackles
It doesn't make a sound
I cover to protect myself
I finally open my eyes
You are still across the field
It is once again blue skies

Author's Note
This is a new version of a poem I wrote when I was seventeen years old. It was a difficult period of time; someone important to me was kept from me for a period of time but we came out on the other side stronger.
I took this picture last winter and thought it was kind of fitting because the sky looks like it's on fire haha
