Emily Dickinson, 415 Christian Era
Alexandria, Egypt
eschewed religion
despite horrific consequences;
crucified footsteps
along Via Dolorosa;
questioned theology;
but, wisely
outlining acceptable worship
beyond prayer beads, books
charting astrology;
welcomed all regardless
for who they were;
mathematical language
calculated fibrous anomalies
within her Neoplatonist mind—
philosophical, mystical overtones
Universally One
Wisdom superseding current times
continues to be despised
by ignorant counterparts
spreading rumours constructed from lies
a victim of political jealousy
she received its deadly blow—
remembered as dying persons
freezing in the snow;
first chill, afterward stupor
then, finally—letting go

I did my homework on Dickinson and can see the relationship between her Massachusettes self and this Alexandria counterpart; the former taking up residence in her mind ( much like her withdrawing from society in her house ) and the latter valuing the world of though as the primary universe upon which the material is a symbolic representation of; each embracing their own ideas about spirituality rather than adhering to religious doctrine.
Their deaths of course apparently different, for the Emily we are familiar with "suffered and died" of natural causes - supposedly Bright's disease. She was a frail person, as if she too was likewise not fully invested in the physical realm.
And there is the correlation for me.
Another amazing perspective of a beloved poet.

This was a tough one because I felt her life mirrored, in many respects, Hypatia's. Emily was definitely a recluse for a reason.

Wonderful portrayal of Emily Dickinson's life dear Ahavati. Her poem " I shall not live in vain" is etched forever in my mind.

I love the chilling end, so descriptive of her cerebral way of acceptance and surrender to circumstance that came through in her pure, observational way of writing.
Also the poem conveys that sense of her seeming unawareness of how astute she really was, possibly due to how her and other women were treated at that time..
