Set Wide the Gulf that Floods the Morning Light
(a sonnet)
Set wide the gulf that floods the morning light,
That fills all space in unexpected rush,
That screams with joy whose rise express delight
Takes by surprise the one who gains its flush.
In touch and talk, whose quills the night dispends,
The new dawn mouths define to take within,
The spell those hungry hours would hope to end,
To each the other joins and play begin.
With eager gait and swiftest prod, their dance,
As if engaged in heightened country reel,
To eager heights they fly as if entranced,
His eager gift becomes at tongue’s reveal.
And swifter still, as she his gift receives,
Her famished lips in held convulse relieve.
