Never the Twain

What is it in certain men's DNA
that makes them act in a certain way?
To harbour secrets big and bold
appear aloof, austere and cold
What makes them love and care?
What makes them risk and dare
to lose it all on the throw of dice
a lifetime's work lost in a trice
To want a girl or perhaps a guy
is life just a lottery until you die?
Programmed to lust out of need
to propagate humans with our seed
To love a woman requires attention
To love another needs dedication
In isolation both are wonderful
brought together makes you a fool
petty jealousies are divisive
with heated rows so corrosive
East is East and West is West
Love them but ... separately is best
My burden alone as the 'love cheat'
but never the twain shall meet

Author's Note
inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "The Ballad of East and West"

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God's great Judgement seat;
But there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
When two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!
