the confrontational mirror

my ego still sees me age thirty-five
young and beautiful
the mirror is confrontational
it argues you're forty-nine
and haven't aged well

the mirror is right
I've lived a hard life
it shows on my face
each line tells a tale
of late night drinking

of living like there is no tomorrow
I never expected there to be one after all
I always thought I would die young

I didn't...

the mirror reflects so much
of what I would like to deny
my ego can't handle the truth
so I don't take pictures
I look in the mirror with one eye closed

vanity sigh I was vain
I suppose there is some lesson to be learned
from my fall from beauty's grace
but I've yet to learn it

if we were face to face
I would still flirt with my soul
because that's where my real beauty lies

it learned to shine
when all else fell away
so today I look in the mirror
and answer you lie
