Smudge Blessing
May the memories
of this house fade
for my dwellings
to make way
May I be protected
while I’m here
as well as loved ones
I hold dear
May this hearth
become my home
cleanse my spirit
and heal my soul

A good cleanse can help realign us with ourselves and our sacred spaces.

Smudging and invocations - a bit of a lost art but reminds me of (happy-challenging) time I spent for a short while on vision quest with American Indians 20 years ago. Kiva time is coming up at the Winter Solstice - we shall be celebrating it (instead of Christmas) as we have done every year since that time. Our grown-up kids also celebrate it, wherever they are in the world - a family ritual that connects us. Thank you for the write that reminds me of this.

I’ve been smudging for years now, although I believe I still have a lot to learn. I’m happy to have stirred some nostalgia for you Josh. Would you care to expand on the meaning of Kiva time?
I will be formally celebrating Winter Solstice this year for the first time. We’ve found a Yule log from our property and gathered bits of evergreen and pine cones to decorate. It’s wonderful to feel so connected to nature, even during these months of decaying weather.

The Kiva ceremony is a quiet one, with two aspects: leaving behind the old; and bringing in the new.
The ritual for the first is to bind a stick with differing coloured yarns, where each colour represents something from this year you want to leave behind. The stick is later burned (along with everybody else's taking part) at dawn the following morning. We usually burn ours around midnight, after completing the second part ...
... which is to embroider a piece of cloth with a symbol capturing the essence of what you want to bring into your life in the coming year. It's then stitched up into a small bundle, and a seed is put in it for each new thing you want to bring into your life. The seeds are then planted out on the Spring Equinox in March.
Sounds good what you are planning for Winter Solstace; I reckon reconnecting with Earth's natural cycles is vital in our technological age.

Wow I love the symbology of the Kiva ceremony, and this is a Native American tradition? I’ll have to read more into it, sounds quite fascinating. Over the years my holidays have become evermore eclectic in observation and celebration. Thank you so much for sharing your practices!

It's something we learned from the "Ehama" people, who are "The Keepers of the Teachings of the Delicate Lodge" as far as I remember. A small group; ... (just checking on line right now ...) yes, they are still going. You can find out more about them on: www.ehama.org

We have been taught to shun ritual ..but it is needed on many levels for personal and society as a whole to exist...It connects to a core self which leads us to the original source...this is a lovely blessing...
