Ides of March

Snow rests
In the laps
of trees
still bare, buds slowly
swelling

winds howl
through branches
aching for warmth

dark clouds nestle
on mountaintops
offer splintered light

message of spring,
clusters of daffodils
bent in harsh winds,
a beautiful splash of yellow
amidst green, grey
