Many moons ago [poetry for the cynic]
it's a hard-sold revolution
gone cold, for the want of a martyr
and not a colour left to die for
behold the centenary!
and we lined the streets
just like the others
lined them
for King George

Re. Many moons ago [poetry for the cynic]
"Ireland as distinct from her people, is nothing to me: and the man who is bubbling over with love and enthusiasm for Ireland, can yet pass unmoved through our streets and witness all the wrong and the suffering, the shame and the degradation brought upon the people of Ireland –
aye, brought by Irishmen upon Irishmen and women, without burning to end it, is in my opinion, a fraud and a liar in his heart, no matter how he loves that combination of chemical elements he is pleased to call Ireland."
- James Connelly, executed by Brittish firing squad, Dublin 1916 for his part in the Easter rising

When the flags have fallen and the echoes forgotten - the remembrance is just a spectacle

I've thought a lot lately that it's called a revolution because it keeps coming back around. Lately, the revolts are infiltrated and highly controlled. One day it has to catch on that we're only winning the ones they let through. I think there must be another way, one no-one has thought of yet, but I can't think of it neither. i feel we are at a crucial point.
the tone of your poem really stands out to me as a familiar feeling, summarized. I put down the protest sign recently, saddened by how efficient their "divide and conquer" tactics are working. I sat and watched the series of Zeitgeist films last week and now I'm just watching the show, waiting on the stage change.
thanks for this timely piece.
cheers,
Miki ;)

A very bitter and sarcastic poem indeed, mocking, I think, how in the eyes of the narrator once lusty and heartfelt traditions have become like a Pavlovian response for an ignorant, apathetic populace. Thank you for the read, I enjoyed it a lot.

How're doing
mocking would probably be the (hopfully ) main influence here, I suppose bitter and sarcasm may have surfaced...
It got ridiculous, man. I mean circus would be an understatement. thanks. ...I'm sorry I had to wire it.

I wrote a similar short poem about the queen's jubilee a long time ago, back when I was Heslopian, in which the queen's fake little regal wave is mentioned haha.
