Though light has left his marble eyes
The tomb has made him wise.
There deep, cold, on stone-clad ground
His thoughts swirl round and round.
There on his back
In a world of black
His mind is clear and sound.
The village comes in envy
All to see
His brow by knowledge crowned.
Great thoughts yet bind
His deepest mind.
And all the village comes to see
The man slain by immortality.
