Melody

So haunting a melody
Twinkles like starlight on high.
Through veins it travels like lustrous wine;
A jewel sought that no man can define.
Down low halls it majestic flutters
And the violin sweetly mutters
Soft as swirls of snow on grounds consecrate
Where sighs each grave of long-lost fate
Below the tide of a chorus imagined
Upon eiderdown layers of silent winter wind.
Notes I heard where my dreams bled
A pool of sorrow from within my weary head,
Poison though with allure sublime
In each mirthless, well-studied chime.
Echoes raised in the wanderings of that night
Pursue me yet in the sun’s grave, rising light.
Unrecalled faces of the dead
Who danced in the horror of my bed:
A stream of that unconscious dance I feel
Follows me from abysses black, unreal.
And if I shared such an abysmal fright
The angels would abandon me in flight.
No Heaven awaits he who hears such a note
That on the margin of sanity doth dangerously float.
But ah! To madness I would gladly succumb
If I could see realms where such voices stem from.
For reality would be simple to leave behind
If the strange composer I could find
Amid the spheres that to his music gave birth,
Alien to the subtle hymns of the Earth.

A slave to that art would I be
For but one last taste of that melody.
