The Crystal City

Far beyond the golden glade
Where the stallion bears the horizon
Flaming with the high blade
Of fair Orion
The lone city of crystal sadly gleams
Her high spires driven
With the fading dreams
That flutter soft to desolate Heaven
To the harp's silver melody,
Low eiderdown notes
Of that Kingdom's melancholy
Where the lone banner flows and floats
To the ground where each flower lies
At the door of each ancient tomb:
Flowers of mourning, of discordant sighs
Without fair hue, without perfume.
O'er their thorns strange spirits fly
To feed on the high flames
Of that city doomed to die,
Where but a sad memory remains,
Souring through streets paved of glittering stones,
Soaring past the neglected crowns
Of a thousand burning thrones.
Soaring past the emerald downs
To whisper in the high grasses
Where the stallion passes
Into vacant towers of twilight
As falls on that city eternal night.
