the great red road
the heat’s gassy breath
belches into the bedroom
American warmth
bodies and buildings
distorting metal cases
Paris and Beirut
Christian sects cry out
expulsion of immigrants
hired help listening
seal up the borders
refuse homeless refugees
bible meaningless
family portraits
don rich fireplace mantels
foreign ancestors
fleeing oppression
Ellis Island aliens
hopeful descendants
decades grow older
history is forgotten
new generation
defending their land
assault-rifled hypocrites
tribal councils laugh

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
You cast a light on these words in my mind. Sad what time has done to everything this country once stood for. Very thought provoking work.

You've pointed out the very hypocrisy that makes it hard for me to watch campaigning going on for the U.S. presidency. This country was founded by religious and political refugees who committed hideous acts of genocide on the indigenous peoples of the land, and those they enslaved ... Maybe that's why we fear outsiders so.
Powerful ink.

We fear the future and create a future of fear - when we forget our past - this haiku stream carries so much on it - masterwork

Rendered speechless. This renku leaves an impact on my heart and soul. You linked history and present and future fears in a well-thought though emotional piece. Thanks for sharing! I like it very much.

Thank you. I feel sometimes my writings are so full of excess words. I use haiku & renku as a discipline for brevity hoping it will teach me the power of selection.

Shows how sometimes those whose ancestors took advantage of sanctuary in a liberal country can become illiberal and anti-immigrant themselves a generation or more on.

another generation, another fence...
just occasionally, however -
although of course one needs to
stress the rarity of the occasion -
somebody remembers to bring along
a gate...

This is all so true we have rejected religion without replacing it with anything as sound.Morality and ethics no longer feature in world politics.

This poem resonated with me--succinct, crisp, and provocative message. Political commentary with an edge--and a wonderful combination and parallel between the before (the past) and the after (the future). This is a smart piece, and fine poetry. The picture was a lovely addition.
