I am not sure to remove it. Ultimately you would know better than me. There is love in this poem, but a lonely or lost love? One you enjoy on your own? Maybe that is the disease you are talking about? I would leave it. It makes one question, like myself, and jars the experience by making it more ominous. Thats my reaction.
