You say
like me you want to be
you don’t know me
I barely know myself
You see
my bright and happy flag
flapping in the sea breeze
not knowing
it tops the mast
of the vast shipwreck
lying beneath the surface
You think
I don’t hurt as much as you do?
that I don’t fear?
of these I am, at times, paralyzed
let not my cheery disposition
deceive you
You must understand
we all experience
equal parts tragedy, comedy and drama
and the panoply of their inherent emotions
that’s what makes us all curiosities
You need
to discover you
play your part
of which there is no understudy
do this
and you will never yearn
to be another
like me you want to be
you don’t know me
I barely know myself
You see
my bright and happy flag
flapping in the sea breeze
not knowing
it tops the mast
of the vast shipwreck
lying beneath the surface
You think
I don’t hurt as much as you do?
that I don’t fear?
of these I am, at times, paralyzed
let not my cheery disposition
deceive you
You must understand
we all experience
equal parts tragedy, comedy and drama
and the panoply of their inherent emotions
that’s what makes us all curiosities
You need
to discover you
play your part
of which there is no understudy

and you will never yearn
to be another
