DOWNTOWN SCENERY

On my way to the office
just stepped off the bus
the hot and oh so humid air
feels comfortable on my face
a welcome sensation
after riding in that public transit
 walk-in-freezer

Crossing Main
with the light-rail train approaching
I stop in my tracks
on the tracks
in stunned reverence
for the beauty I see
standing on the opposite corner
beeeeeeeeeeeeep!

Tall, brunette
with emerald eyes set
in a flawless porcelain face
a cheerful, knee-length,
floral print, Summer dress
with exposed alabaster shoulders
drapes perfectly over her slender frame
a colorful fanfare announcing
super-model legs
finished in dark green pumps

Her succulent red lips
form a radiant, confident smile
as she giggles
her smartphone pressed to her ear
probably speaking with
her excessively handsome boyfriend
I approach
resisting the urge to take her in my arms
and whisper the obvious
“You are magnificently beautiful.”
in the hopes that she
might have a thing for
well-seasoned, obese, Quasimodo-like men

Instead
I cooly avert my gaze
as if to say,
to the Mona Lisa,
“You’re not so special”
foolishly imagining
that she would defy
all laws of nature
and notice me
I keep walking
reaching the far corner
of the block
I glance back
she is gone

Entering the frozen tundra
of my office building
I ponder the scene
my attraction was in no way sexual
she had not much to hold on to
I admired her beauty as I would
a gazelle bounding across the Savannah
or a majestic Monarch butterfly
one of nature’s many treasures

Continuing
I consider the pretty people
what do they think?
how do they feel?
are they perpetually self confident?
always comfortable with their beauty?
or do they, like most of us,
experience self-doubt
and bouts of low self-esteem?
I would guess the latter
but I may just be fooling myself
as I so often do
