Venetian Ecstasy

(artwork suggested by lilsouthernbelle)

she was a doll in masquerade
and I was a marionette
the night was a Sybarite revelry
the champagne was laced with regret

the ‘Goodnight Waltz’ was playing
the music held us in thrall
harlequins and gypsies were dancing
and violins wept in the hall

we were the victims of passion
the scandalous moonlight brings
my heart made a song of her beauty
and she cut away my strings

she teased with her sparkling eyes
the saccharine taste of her kiss
the wind would whisper our secrets
the stars would witness our bliss

her inhibitions fell with her garments
as we set to the lovers’ task
but she kept an air of intrigue:

she never removed her mask…
