a smoky bar at the corner of Lost Hwy & Desolation Alley.
I always end up here when the city gets real lonely.
through the drunken crowd & the haze I could make out Rita;
her beauty glowed even in the cold, trembling neon. I knew
she’d be here: she was a whore, & Bogart’s attracted all the
right clients.
she turned away as I approached her, & I felt that familiar
sickness in my gut. how does a man love a woman like her?
under the gloss & the pearls & the designer dress that fit her
like opulent skin, she was dirty. sure, it was sinful, it would
only lead to more heartbreak, but I knew I loved her, &
nothing else mattered.
when I touched her shoulder, she put her fingers on my lips to
keep me quiet. ‘don’t talk. don’t talk at all. because whatever
you say doesn’t mean anything.’
maybe I didn’t hear her right, or didn’t want to follow her logic.
or maybe I was just stupid. ‘how can you know what I say before
I even say it?’
her eyes were indigo lasers that pierced me clean through. ‘look
at me. haven’t you noticed before? I’m a woman.’
she walked away then, & soon she’d be gone.
with another lover.
so I could stay here & get drunk, or I could go home & write a
story. the story of my beautiful Rita. put all of my love & sorrow
into it. all of the tears that a desperate tale can hold. & when I
use up my share of words, I’ll write a bullet into the verses. my
story will be cocked & loaded, & I will stare lovingly into the
barrel of it…
…and pull the trigger.

I'm entranced as always after reading your work ... This is marvelous - loving someone beyond all reason; going beyond every fiber of reason to have a night with her even it means the death of you ... I can feel the weight of the pistol in my hand because they'll never be another like her ...
