early morning caffeine
The sun comes up at 5am now
and I wake to an empty bed
with your name on my lips
We don’t belong here
in each other’s arms
so tell me why
I keep coming back to you
I wake to memories
that reality can’t dispel
in those brief moments
before I open my eyes
There is familiarity in the coffee
you drink black
and sometimes
when the light catches right
I can see your face fade away
into the unfathomable depths
of caffeine
as I pour in the milk and sugar
and stir myself into being
The sun comes up at 5am now
and somehow it always reminds me
of you and the ways we used to be
before the sun scattered
the myth of our shadows
revealing us for what we really were
