Block Party
Social media creates
its own invitations
So I went
I laughed
I cried
thinking about my dad’s last moments
His last words
They surely weren’t
I can’t breathe
Not to the 100 that came to get him
20 of them got hurt just trying to get at him
A knee on his neck long before that day
So I kneel
Trying to find the answer
And they kneeled with me too
its own invitations
So I went
I laughed
I cried
thinking about my dad’s last moments
His last words
They surely weren’t
I can’t breathe
Not to the 100 that came to get him
20 of them got hurt just trying to get at him

So I kneel
Trying to find the answer
And they kneeled with me too

After the curfew
an erection
births bastards
essential cash cows
stray from herd?
get rebranded
McDonalds, Nike, Facebook
I’m out here as a cattle thief
until I’m lynched
My last words?
Same as his.

Broken
She delights in the most improbable.
like breaking her crayons 🖍 to hear the pop.
a testament to the strength she’s developed in 967 days
But when she’s done
So are they
She wants no part of the tattered ones
Dutiful father.
I pick them up
Not able to teach her
just yet
that the tattered ones
paint the best stories.
Their armor easily
And willing shed to provide brilliant texture and contrast
I’ll try to teach her to love
the broken ones ...

I stay on my grind cousin ...
stay on it
... that's what HOV says
it's 2am
and the baby's sick
but she still laughs
when I sing "Baby Shark"
so I study
ate guinea pig ravioli
in Harlem on Thanksgiving eve
the girls looked beautiful
long and lithe in knitted grey was one
defiant natural locks define intellect for the other
so I study
they took my young prince away
psychiatric ward for children
i cried
critical race theory
and yeah
"Fuck you"
and the president you voted for
so I study...

Once
once I beat a boy
but I've done it before
the stench of his brown skin crackles
against mine
snot bubbles blossom
where he waters his cheeks
I'm going to work with his father
I know he loves him
and hates me
his father's belt
This was the first exercise I tried by Taylor Mali: Using the two poems below as examples, write a similar short poem that begins with the word “Once” and ends with the speaker of the poem admitting or confessing or maybe suddenly realizing that he or she or it has become an inanimate object like a flower or a...
