The ghosts dancing on the beach
Are the names on the memorial plaque
Those that never came back
They wanted to save the world
They fell in the first attack

                   calmly prays the soldier

hand me down my spirit gun
from the rack on bloodied wall
shield me with justice and freedom
as I leap to the bugle’s call.

on the brazen feet of Mercury
I will rush to the cannon’s sound
to the ghostly eyes of my enemy
with my comrades, to combat bound.

send news of the boisterous fighting
to the worried awaiting the story
on the hills and the peaceable shores
that poems may be writ of the glory.

keep safe the women who orchestrate me
their hearts and their love I keep near
and when I am hurried to battle
their tears wash away my fear.

Lest we Forget

Silent shadows filing up the tropical mountains
Forced death march by the conquerer
God turned away from his children
Who fought and killed for dominance of His creations

In a land other than their own
Full blasts, angry greedy minds of puny leaders
To ground the meek, force the inhabitants
To bow to their mighty civilisation,

The proud  Flag of the Rising Sun flew
Flew over Borneo, over the Pinoys,
The Sulus, the kings of the seas
The sea dwellers, the seafarers
The tribal hill  warriors
The graceful plains people

The sky woke up to man-made lightnings
The ground shook with thunder
The innocent lost their loved ones
Lost their innocence

Hell's gate opened, Paradise lost,
Fruits of rape, pillage and plunder
Of mindless acts urged by lust
hate and anger

The Islanders know still
We will always remember.

SOMEWHERE IN SAMBISA FOREST

Somewhere in Sambisa forest
Abducted girls cry
Longing to see their homes again
And some of them die

Somewhere in Sambisa forest
Our gallant brothers fight
Against those who have taken evil
To an unimaginable height

Loyalty in the face of jeopardy
Top secrets compromised
As the struggle bears a political undertone
Our brothers meet their demise

Yet courage rise with danger
Dauntless they are matching on
Until the menace is no more
The battle has just began

Somewhere in Sambisa forest
Our heroes sacrifice
Brave and gallant men
Devoid of cowardice

My Old Friend Darkness "Why"

Loyal...Compassionate...Trustworthy...Friends
But....My old friend, Darkness has consumed them all.
Jealousy...Hatred...and his consumed soul.
Why my old friend....have you betrayed me?
"Because I am a mindless soul...That eager's to see the blood and take them whole..
But your soul is the acceptation....
I think i will chew you in 2 seconds..
Your soul just smells so good...I cant resisted your souls delicious appearance.
I'm sorry friend but you are no more."
W..Why.. my old friend darkness.....Why did you put me in horror

Mammy

I sing the joy of emancipation’s
And grief’s lamination
In countermelody
For on the sands of Cold Harbor
Among the raged discarded
Lie still, blue and gray martyrs
Among the pile
Of decay and disease
Stirs my yellow haired boy
He cries out
“Mammy, Oh My Mammy
Come help me!”

Author’s Notes:
The above poem, ‘Mammy’ is dedicated to untold stories of African American slave women who as wet nurses, loved and nurtured a generation of children of the privileged.  Despite the loyalties and prejudices of war, they grieved the loss of their rebel nursing sons that died in this terrible war.

In Arms

Before the parade there’s a passage;
Brothers meet for the first time
as adults, in a steel jungle.
Away from the family they’ve known, some, for the first time.

The anarchy, the commotion that first day, that first week;
all the confusion
fuses them. Personalities and characters collide.
Molecules forming a new element. Strong. Order from chaos.

Planes and boats carry them to their next leg.

Chaos from order.

Some will lose legs.
Some, arms. Some only their sense of self,

All will gain brothers. All return home more than they once were.

A name on a wall,
a cross in a field,
a flag in a glass case,
a pin on a lapel

are only reminders that there is a shield.

A brave family. Willing to give their lives
for all our families.

Throwback

I saw a young man today, a photo of him
kneeling, draped in the stars & stripes.

I found him online and was struck by
how he looks like my great-uncle David,

dropped stitches in a quilt, the two of us,
mismatched of the family, short & dark.

Don't look familiar 'cept to each other,
related by proxy, wishing he knew how
much I've loved him even though he's gone.

Of his place alongside kindred spirits,
separated by generations, and bonded
with scout pledges, and Schwinn bikes.

I've always missed him because I know him,
but, he couldn't wait that long for me.

Something went so very wrong long before
I came along too late, when time would sag.

Overturning his world, the Pawtucket kid
in a jeep, suddenly gets the news flash that

the war's over, that they'd be sending him
home, covered in a freshly draped flag.

Author's note:
My great-uncle David, who served in the United States Army Corp, lost his life in 1945, just outside his base in France when his jeep hit a landmine, killing him instantly.  He has never been far from our family, so fun-loving was he, and no newborns to the family have ever been named David since.  It's like his name was retired, like the way the number for a football or baseball player on a team is retired - no other will replace him.
