Gardebellum
Fat hares sit on thrones
deep in burrows, holding court.
Snakes and foxes plot.
Invasive species
march, drinking the sprinklers dry
on the offensive.
A rabbit rampage.
Carrot shrapnel scattered like
coleslaw confetti.
Crowns and cottontails
litter an empty kingdom—
subterranean.
Above, no bounty
awaits; forsaken baskets
set aside, fruitless.

Betrayal, Denial, and Delusion
Baby, you can't be that dissatisfied,
What are you going to do tonight?
Who are you going to go see?
Is it worth it being all over?
Is it worth you leaving me?
I can provide the love you need.
I do not have to concede.

And you end up at another man's door.

Greeting you with eyeless smiles
They adknowledge you are an object
In the world
But that is all
A tool or an obstacle
Only
There is nothing behind your eyes
To them
Nothing to know or to understand
Only another mirror
A canyon wall
A selfie stick
Or else a piece of slate
A dropped signal
A no-network-available
Vertigo
In the uncanny valley
Of eyeless smiles

Instead of Dreaming
Magnificent, she lay, as midnight’s metropolitan half-light
stripes her face just enough for me to count the eyelashes
that grace those resting windows into a soul that burns with so much passion for love and endless loyalty it could teach the
orneriest of pupils how to strive and thrive in what’s all fair…
One-hundred and forty-three.
One-hundred and forty-three reasons why I could stay here until forever
staring at a sleeping beauty, not of fairy tale or lore,
but of certainty and passion ...

trundle in the summer months
with no concern for
s-p-f-50-lathered
bronze
concrete clouds come

basal cambers coated in slate grey
wondering why
they are defied
such hubris
humans have
holding on to what they believe
belongs to them but is
the sole property of the sea
flocks
crammed in car clusters
on the freeway
fleeing
make the evening news
my muse

The One
I’ve never met “the one.” I’ve had many “ones.”
Lived with some.
Engaged a couple.
Even married one.
But if I’ve learned one thing
it is that you can change who will be your “one,”
but you cannot ever change,
the one who is seeking.
One can change one’s location.
One can alter one’s desires, approach, and expectations,
but one cannot escape oneself.
One will always see only one reflection in the mirror.
Only one gaze will ever meet one there.
Sad and lonely.
Uncertain.
Cold, and...
Lived with some.

so invigorating
it makes me want to come
to her with complete sincerity.

Actualized.
Alluring,
in all her natural, splendorous
glory. She is
lovely
in the truest sense of the word.

Before the parade there’s a passage;
Brothers meet for the first time
as adults, in a steel jungle.
Away from the family they’ve known, some, for the first time.
The anarchy, the commotion that first day, that first week;
all the confusion
fuses them. Personalities and characters collide.
Molecules forming a new element. Strong.
Order from chaos.
Planes and boats carry them to their next leg.
Chaos from order.
Some will lose legs.
Some, arms. Some only their sense of self.
All will gain...
