Mr. Daire

Poetry Noir: The Dame that Got Away
I watch him take a long drag..
cigar ember taking spotlight in the dim light
of the smoky room, captivating-
and I am the audience, transfixed by that velvet voice
midnight sweet, laced with danger and intrigue
bedroom eyes sweeping indolently
along the shadows of my skin
I give no indication of arousal
other than the coy smile on my red lips
"It's been awhile"
I admit after a sip of bourbon over ice
the taste strong and exquisite
an expensive glass, though it suits his tastes
the class he indicates with his father's ring
the suit and matching hat
He says nothing more
some pretty thing sings on vinyl
voice lovely and faint, drifting to our ears
here in this private room, a dainty trifle
that keeps the silence from taking heat
Oh the things his mouth could do-
I watch those strong lips finally upturn
it was as if he were remembering the past
back in the days of school and that awful dance
and oh how we danced and laughed,
almost made love if not for curfew
And now look at him!
A detective, and I, an actress-
reminiscing, and missing
all these years of smoke and leather
and cologne and that masculine musk
of strange, cold men
I took lovers in my dire hours of lonesome drinking
the scent of wine and the dark moments of thinking
overthinking and shrinking back into the backstage
of my shows where I could overhear the enthusiasm
the love and lust of a captivated audience crying for more-
but I would pour another glass
lace and dresses discarded on a dusty floor
"I'm going to fuck you."
My lips part with unmistakable shock
and my chest rises to capture the air
that escaped my chest in that instant
the cocky, brilliant mind of Mr. Daire
dared such thrilling, dangerous words
to fruition
and my lack of voice is a submission
the desire like fire in his eyes a promise,
and in this game we play like hunter and prey
I feel like I will let him
have his way

Tremont, Calling
Chinatown glistens in rains—
mists, not heavy enough to dampen
streets beyond mild sullenry.
The Asians go to and fro, materializing
through sewer steam and neon
then disappear into alleyways, amid
taxi horns.
I walk—
casual observer, careful
not to look the pushers in the eye.
Frank no longer stands
with his “Anything Helps” sign
where Kneeland meets Tremont—
I saw him for years, then
he just didn’t come back
one day.
Tremont is calling again.
I walk under gray skies, dimming
in evening mists, past theaters
given over to digital marquees, and
graves of our founding fathers,
until—
I find what I’m looking for, the
one place left untouched by time.
I take my seat in gilded balconies
and wait; she will come
and take the worn stage, hair
white as the rains,
Patti Smith,
goddess of a time, past.

Crazy
a story, in verse
It was late, and I was done with meetings,
headed for the bar in the hotel.
My worldview was disturbed by a chance greeting
from a beauty who was nuts as hell!
She seemed lost in thought, a bit confused,
and talking to someone who was not there.
She didn’t sound like she had too much booze,
but more like crazy talk, so I took care!
She argued with some fantasy-borne lover
and criticized some fault I didn’t catch.
Their argument got hot, I looked for cover!
She stopped, and turned, and asked me for a match!
She wore a silky bathrobe, quite translucent,
and inappropriate for public garb;
but no one in the bar then seemed to notice,
her beauty, mixed with crazy, equaled charm!
I struck a match to light her cigarette,
but she drew close and dropped it on the floor.
I could not dodge that crazy woman’s come-on,
She took my hand and led me towards the door.
Just outside the bar, she turned and shouted,
continuing the fight from just before
as if I were the one with whom she argued,
the whole thing creeped me out, right to my core!
I made up some excuse to get away from
this crazy, sexy woman I just met.
She flashed her eyelashes, and I succumbed
to the oddball charm of this soubrette.
It’s not that my intention was to bed her,
although, I will admit that crossed my mind.
I simply couldn’t help but watch this train wreck;
It didn’t hurt, she had a cute behind!
While riding on the lift, she grabbed my face
and kissed me like the world was going to end!
Then, she groped around, to my disgrace.
I pulled away, my honor to defend.
She laughed as if she just had teased her brother,
convincing me that’s who she thought I was!
Then she talked as if I were her mother,
I realized she had major mental flaws.
She led me to her room in total silence,
then banged the door, rushed in, and lit the lights!
In the room, a naked man was present,
he rushed at me, I thought I’d have to fight!
She shouted, “Pay up now, or he will kill you!”
and suddenly, the man picked up his pants.
He fumbled with his trousers, and withdrew
what was clearly an enormous wad of cash!
Not stopping to get dressed, he made his exit.
She grabbed the wad of cash right from his hand.
She winked at me, and said, “Don’t look so desperate!
I got no pimp. He thought you were my man!”
I said, “You crazy bitch! He might have killed me!”
She answered, “Not a chance! I picked you out--
You're a guy who looks a little crazy,
and with my threat, he paid up and got out!”

Stormy Night In The City
Another stormy night in the city
As she entered fluently
Into the smoke filled bar
In atomic blonde proportions
Everyone in the joint knew her
As the dame that got away
She looked like an angel
But there was a devil inside
If you looked closer
She had heartbreak in her eyes
A soul crushed divorcee
With menace on her mind
The way she held her cigarette and puffed
Had every man within touching distance
Groan in anticipation
With lips that promised more than a goodnight kiss
She wanted to forget
The dirt and grime of the day
Those curves born of heaven
Where now formed on the highway to Hell
Still with a mushy heart
Romance was further from her mind
No meek woman now
She loved the power she held In her domain
Tonight she wanted contact
With a man who never took no for an answer
She had enough of subservient chumps
That littered her bed recently
She craved more than a good woman should
Yet this freedom was liberating
The long ago innocent virgin
Now fantasised herself as a whore for the taking
Nursing a whiskey the night rolled on
She sighed at the sight
Broken husbands silly boys
There was no one strong enough for her
Getting up she gave them a show
As left the bar every curve motioned
This is what you see guys
But you ain’t never gonna touch
As she entered fluently
Into the smoke filled bar
In atomic blonde proportions
Everyone in the joint knew her

Homicide is My Life
Homicide is my life
Forgive the contradiction
But after 20 years of service
In this frozen metropolis
Called Minneapolis
I've investigated
So many murders
I've become indifferent
To the crime
But this one
Is an exception
It was made to look
Like just another suicide
But before a person
Hangs themselves
They always have
One last cigarette
And her pack of Salem's
Weren't even unwrapped
And what green eyed
Redhead sweety
Would bother donning
A emerald see-through
Babydoll nightie
For her date
With the almighty?
Things didn't add up
It's my job as a detective
To bring everything
Into perspective
And I won't stop
Till her killer
Is caught
Because if I don't
The image of this
Exotic beauty
Will haunt me
Into eternity!

Fallen diva
Perched in a peacock pose
feather fascinator, the net in holes
gin bottles in her line of sight
the tonic lost in her hidden plight
The darken end of fame exposed
stage make up the cracks and flaws
the mascara like black lace daubed
mirror reflects the self absorbed
If she could order a round of applause
the effervescence of yesterdays clothes
time with its passing shows all your warts
again the highball that drew the encore
Eloquence that her fingers speak
a beckon scripted in endless repeats
cost of that old fashion tipple
champagne ego its bubbles so fickle
But i would like to toast an ageing poster
the Broadway star now just a ghost "her"
an anecdote her life condensed
flickering diva, bar flys, decent

Private Dick
I looked at my watch, it was nearly eight o’clock. It had been a slow night so I decided to close up shop when she walked in through the door like a cool night breeze.
She was a buxom brunette with a silhouette like magic and dreams. She wore a red and black dress that hugged her curves. This dame looked more dangerous than all the perps I had ever tailed.
She had an hour glass figure with hips like a stand-up jazz bass, ready to be pressed against you, to be plucked and played. She had red luscious lips so full and pouty she looked like she was constantly mouthing “ooh” or “poof”. She had a chest that screamed for attention as if they were saying: “Take a quick gander but don’t make it obvious you perv”.
“Are you?” she paused for a second looking at the sign on the door, her voice was soft and sultry as she took a breath like she was about to sing a bluesy tune… “Wally?”
She had legs for daze, wearing a pair of black peep toe pumps and silk stockings with seams that ran all way up into that tight taut tempting terrific tumultuous figure of hers.
“Yes m’am” I said removing my fedora, putting it back on my desk.
We locked eyes for a second, like a Mexican stand-off. Her guns pointing and I was try my hardest best not to show or fail this test.
“What can I do for you Ms.?” I dragged the Ms. part. I couldn’t tell in this light if she was old enough to be a housewife or if she was young, dumb and full of energy to carry on into the night.
“Ms. M” she responded. “Just M.”
“Well Ms. M, what I can do you for on this late Friday evening?”
She paused for a second. I could feel the tension in the air. I loosened up my tie, the sound of the fan whirred over us as the lights from the city peered through the blinds.
“I need you to prove my innocence” she said.
“You need a lawyer for that” I replied.
“I’ve been found innocent in court” she responded.
“Well whadda you need me for?”
The brunette and her silhouette lit up a cigarette and said…“because I killed my husband.”
