Hearbreak Avenue
Took to the long road
windows rolled down
hard hot breaths
of dry wind filling the
lungs, beating the skin
The unkempt road boasting
cracks and potholes became
a canvas for the scenery
as weeds popped their
heads out through cracks
a group hallelujah to the heavens
A worship to the hot burning sun
There is something wonderful
about weeds growing through
concrete. An honest freedom. A risky dare
to the authority that could have
them killed for no reason other
than their geographic stance
While the sun almost melts their
soft leaves to the tarmac that
begs for the nutriance of the
liquid in photosynthesis
Their posture retains it's
confidence and strength.
The blonde in the passenger seat
using the heated wind to style
her nylon like whips of hair
beat the headrest of that
seat like a merciless viking
flogging a bare fair skinned back
Has her clean bare feet on the dashboard
Her head nodding
in time to the bass beats
some techno radio station
is filling our ears with
Turns and pierces my soul with
her green eyes smiling
"I'm a weed"
she softly mumbles
"I'm as hard as concrete"
I whisper in the nicotine of the
second hand exhale I blow at
the stained windscreen from
the newly lit Camel cigarette
"I know" she retorts as she leans over
to take the warm beer saved in
the console to her lips
"The sun glares through
your cracks"
Then she pulled her dark
spectacles from her cleavage
and
covered her eyes

Travelling Light
travelling alone the wanderer
on the dark road cold hugged body
heavy blessings of rain
visiting the misty evening
the thrump thrump of the wiper
Bee Gees on the radio
singing of dead sun
and Spicks and Specks of life
taking up the air with melancholy
moving on to a holiday to love
of second hand people
a treacle of sad observation
on the road haunted by old songs
thinking of losses, picking wishes off damp air
of warm shelter and warmer food
and murmurs of people around
but there were miles yet to travel
until the warmth of home embraces
the tired mind and exhausted body
of the traveller.

Riviera sundown
backwoods banjo bangin’ in my head
spent the night in a virgin’s bed
the moon shines misty on a lover’s lies
sweetest bluebells in her ‘hurt-me’ eyes
banshee winds, hear them wail & moan
broke her heart & left her all alone
rickety bridge, you got to take it slow
moody river ragin’ far below
blast the highway in the stormin’ rain
Buick’s engine roars away my pain
hard luck cowboy on a lonely ride
too many women stole away my pride
swap my meals for a jug of booze
droppin’ dimes on the jukebox blues
shaky visions of the great beyond
dirty dancin’ with a low-cut blonde
white line outlaw from a nowhere town
cage me up & let the sun go down

My life like country roads
Long and endless
Blue Highways await
Curving slowly
Through small towns
Described with candor
By Least Heat Moon
Written in tune with their odd names
And people
A departure from what is home
To sojourn into my heart
America
Traveling the convoluted fringe
Of my mind
And the wide spaces beyond it
Stretching seemingly into infinity
Past the horizons of my yesterday
Dusty bars
Haunted by Texas ladies men
Where you can hear the jingle of their spurs
And sputtering of their horses
Will cure my awesome thirst
For what might quench my wandering heart
It is lost right now
It ran away
Trying to escape its gritty shackles
Let Lust and man be damned
I will taste the piquant beads
That collect under the lip of autonomy
Its moist offering devoured
I will lie back
Belly full
Letting my hair spill all around me
My toes curled into the beatitides of mossy Earth
And sigh freedom
Long and endless
Blue Highways await
Curving slowly
Through small towns
Described with candor
By Least Heat Moon

Down Sector Five ( a dystopian road trip)
There's no going back
no home
no job
no peace no rest
That sign just read
Welcome to the new world order
Shelter line starts at 5
Mohammed be with you
The highway is alive at night
Nobody kids about where it goes
Helicopters off in the distance
Dying campfire light
The road warrior never mentioned
bodies in the aqueduct
Preacher man pulls out a butt
takes a drag
Mumbles a pray for the dead
The first shall be last, the last shall be first
Hungry and heading for the promised land
A dog for company and a gun in hand
the wind chills these ragged rattling bones
Yea
the highway is alive at night
and everyone knows where it goes

Destination Don't Care
Sky and asphalt blend together
watercolor shades of grey
in the rain
Wheels keep rolling
into a distance unseen
embracing the illusion
an infinity of road
Intentionally losing track of days
since leaving behind something
that passed as home
Several hours separated
from the bad idea passed out
in a hotel bed left at 3 a.m.
Nothing felt better than driving
away from another mistake
Everything she wanted to escape
was never farther than tire tracks
splashing mud on her bumper
But it sure killed time
and she liked its blood
on her hands

in the rain

an infinity of road

Has uncertainty
slowly crept
into your reasoning
as your crossroads
walk this way
on this broken road
of many pathways
where ignorance
likes to play

on this broken road
of many pathways
where ignorance
likes to play

Antelope Valley Correspondence
To my precious friend,
I've long been away I know
but now the time to share:
How dear the images
of my recent road trip to
my sisters' memories,
where we'd go each spring
in the family car since I was
so high to a desert tortoise.
The vistas of highway
belied the tranquility of
a high desert in springtime.
The riot of wild flowers
hide hundreds of lizard mounds
in their fleeting beauty.
Surrounding valleys with
boas of orange & white and
pale blue & purple hillsides.
Splashes of Mojave hues that
vibrate from the urge of wind,
unabated & unchallenged.
Powered by a sun that relents
only when it begins to set,
tickling the sherbet horizon.
Stretching the shadows of
Joshua trees that stand tall,
arms raised in eternal welcome
as I would welcome you
my every-season friend,
with ever-loving regards.
