My Lioness Flickers Between Serengeti Moonbeams
My Lioness Flickers Between Serengeti Moonbeams
Our African vacation starts at a luxury hotel in Nairobi. But I pine for a photographic safari into the Serengeti. Over breakfast, I break some news for Jane. “Hey let’s try this on for size. Jane, I want to take you on a safari into Tanzania. Maybe we’ll have an adventure like in a J.G. Ballard novel.”
She says, “You’re so crazy, but truly we could face off with a pride of lions looking for supper. The signs ain’t good darling. The continental breakfast bar at this hotel is more than enough for me. We can go to the...

On His Anniversary
Every time my wife enters the pool, she can't keep her head above the water
It would look as though she was drowning
I would jump in and save her from the deep end
I'd say, stay in the shallow section, over here
She wouldn't say much and just shake her head
Luckily, I have a lock on the gate, which surrounds the entire in ground pool
I'm the only one that knows the code
I don't allow her near the pool, unless I'm nearby
I needed to install this a few years back, since a tragedy occurred
Our son, who was 4 years old went by the edge of the pool and...

In Exile
I know things got off on the wrong foot right from the start
At the time when I was young I just fell apart
Even after all the years of me trying to do what was right
Lately it just feels like your silence is out of spite
With every visit I loved our conversations and laughs
The quality time was more precious and unforgettable
And as you got older you became stronger and bolder
So I wrote you verses to make our relationship memorable
But something strange happened within the last few years
You’re so distant and quiet and won’t talk to...

Camp Counselor Crush
Camp Counselor Crush
Summer in New Orleans was artichokes dipped in sour cream, plantains ripening in the backyard, and ready to be fried by Mom in a skillet to sweeten my boyish tongue with tropical flavors that summoned the Tarzan in my heart. When Mom baked baklava in the oven the scent was as sweet as the smile of the ladies who strolled the streets of the neighborhood on their evening walks wearing scarves like the Turkish maidens in the pictures from the village of Yalova on the shores of the Sea of Marmara that I only saw in slides from my Dad’s projector.

Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
“Hello Pops. Sorry to intrude on my wonderfully studious young man in the middle of deep tort contemplations, but I have a little problem. Our house has flooded. So here I am with no adult assistance with our three-year-old son and the water, water is everywhere to borrow a phrase from Coleridge’s ‘Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.’ Could you get in that wonderful jalopy your Mom bought for us and take us to dry ground?”
“The car is flooded as well I am afraid. I am at the chapel on campus. Wait just a short while and I am sure the car will revive...

A Fathers heart
In the depths of a father's soul, a story unfolds,
Of sacrifice and pain, too great to be told.
For in the shadows, I silently carry the weight,
Protecting my children, their futures secure and straight.
Through sleepless nights and weary days,
I labor on, my love never sways.
For my children's dreams, my heart does bleed,
A silent warrior, fulfilling every need.
In my tired eyes, wisdom lines lie deep,
Etched by battles fought, secrets I'll forever keep.
I shield them from the darkness that may come,
Guiding them...

Protecting my children, their futures secure and straight.

Buju and Johnny Baw
Chapter 1
Father and Son
An elderly man known as Johnny Baw lived with his teenaged son Buju in a run-down house on Wellington Road. They were underprivileged people of the ghetto. Even though Johnny Baw was a strict disciplinarian, Buju was not a well-behaved boy. Moreover, he acted like a clown. Johnny Baw was a retired electrician, but he occasionally did some work. The skilful man had an old, squeaky bicycle that he rode everywhere he went.
Mischievous people in the neighbourhood called Johnny Baw “Lumpis” He did not like that nickname, so he would curse...

Bar Mitzvah Rituals of the Maltese Brotherhood
Bar Mitzvah Rituals of the Maltese Brotherhood
“Hey there Sherri, the fly of my son’s undies has a stain that just won’t come out. Can you work your magic and remove it?”
“Come again, isn’t he eighteen? Shouldn’t he be past that stage?”
“Don’t I wish, eighteen is the peak of their hormones.”
“Is this the same kind you had me scrub until my fingers were red last time?”
“It is only the aloe cucumber lotion. He took his underwear off before achieving ‘O’.”
“How do you know it is just lotion? Surely he didn’t tell you.”
“Believe me the scent...

TRUE BLUE
Waking up everyday
Wearing the uniform
To serve and protect
Reporting for duty
Investigating complaints, crimes and other incidents to keep the communities safe
However not everybody with a badge treats it with the honour it truly deserves
Those criminals in the force destroy the work of those good few who are still left
To the point where people look at them with mistrust
Never able to speak out even when in distress
Letting all sort of things slide
While handling this and that on the sly
When a mother saw her son join these...

A Civil War Trilogy
William Joseph Grady was born on Friday May 16th. 1845 at his family's farm in Dalton, Georgia, eighty miles or so north of Atlanta and close to the state border with Tennessee. His parents were William and Martha Grady and young William Joseph, Billy-Joe, was their first child. By the time Billy-Joe was ten years old he had been joined by two brothers and a sister. William senior had taken over the farm from his own late father, Joseph, in 1840 therefore it was already quite well established and easily able to sustain the Grady family. Martha, though, had been raised in the city of...

Maternal Venus of Aloe
Maternal Venus of Aloe
In the kitchen, his Mom asks, “What would you like for supper?”
He replies, “We had pizza the last two nights. That sounds good to me.”
She says, “Let’s mix it up with Lasagna.”
“Are we on an Italian week? The menu here sounds straight out of a Mafioso movie.”
“Maybe you could deliver pizza to help pay the bills.”
He replies, “Then we could afford the movie channels. But you might not approve of my late-night viewing.”
She opens a jar of Shea butter and uses her hand to spread it around...
